In order to compile projects on the ESP 12E, obtain the libraries for the board.

Preferences -> Settings -> Additional Boards Manager URLs. Enter in the box: http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json

Then Tools -> Boards - > Board Manager and search for esp8266. Find esp8266 by ESP8266 Community.

It is recommended to set board settings according to the image on the right
