On June 27, 2023, at the Far Eastern University, during one rainy afternoon, three ECE students from the Technological Institute of the Philippines-Manila took home bronze medals in the "Elevate: Race for Topnotchers." In this showdown of wits, Sam Rio Salmingo, Arhen Jake Halili, and Luis Castro emerged third place against giants coming from the National University (NU), Mapua University, De La Salle University (DLSU), Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) among others. The team was composed only of second year students–an enormous disadvantage since the quiz bowl consisted of third-year-level questions. The three overcame the odds, the huge disadvantage, and still took home winnings.
It was also said that the team was notified about the said competition only a day before it began; and they were shocked. Some of the team members, relaxing from some vacation, immediately packed up their things, and from their fresh and cozy province traveled to Metro Manila only to participate in the said contest. However, this does not imply that they came unprepared. As a matter of fact, the team has been preparing ever since the month of April for a much bigger competition–the IECEP Interscholastic Quiz Show. The ECE Department of TIP Manila has a long line of gold medalists in its history. It is, therefore, unsurprising that students from the department will come out victorious in quiz bees such as the one won by our stars here. As of now, the team is currently preparing for the biggest, most expected quiz bee competition, which will occur on the sixth of October. The best of power and luck to them!
