New Umpire Course description:
The course will be available online (via smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer) and may be taken at the student's leisure in conjunction with--and within the limits of--the dates and times set by the instructor. Courses range from 8-12 modules (depending on the sport), with each module being 30-90 minutes long depending on the specific topic and pace of the student. At the end of each module, students will need to pass a quiz to move forward. This course will cover NFHS Rules and "Mechanics" (on-field positioning & signaling). The instructor will be available to help answer any questions that students may have.
What is expected of the student:
It is expected that each student be proficient in reading and writing. Umpires may have to run and be engaged in strenuous physical activity; therefore, students should be ambulatory and have the necessary level of physical fitness required for that sport. Students are expected to complete each class module. Each student will be required to pay an instructional fee which covers the cost of the course, rulebooks, and insurance for the year. Students will be required to be proficient in mechanics (i.e., on-field positioning & signaling). A student will also be required to receive at least 75% on each sport's final exams: one on rules, one on mechanics, and a quiz on OHSAA regulations. After the course and before the first game assignment, it is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED by the OHSAA that a new umpire attend an on-field clinic. The Eastern Cuyahoga County Umpires Association will sponsor a comprehensive all-day training session, as well as provide on-field scrimmage opportunities. Finally, each student will be expected to purchase his or her own equipment and uniform.
