The Honors Program has allowed me to grow not only as a student but also as a future professional, leader, citizen, and community member. The readings, assignments, and projects of the Honors Program have engaged me with many different perspectives and activities not typically found in a regular class setting. The small class sizes of the Honors Program create an environment for open discussion on relevant, important, and sometimes debatable topics. The professors leading the discussions of each class also encourage the diversity of opinions and life experiences we can all as students share with each other. The self-reflection portions of each class have led me as a student to examine areas in life where I excel, but also areas I can improve upon. This aspect of the Honors Program has helped me develop my skills and review the effectiveness of my skill set. Going through my artifacts, I noticed I have become a better writer, presenter, reader, and critical thinker.
As a leader, I now know exactly what leadership styles and approaches I want to utilize in the future. Through various Honors projects, I have learned that the choice of leadership style may depend on the situation and person with whom I am interacting. I have also learned that anyone can become a leader, and there is no specific trait or set of traits that define a leader. In addition, I learned about burnout and the importance of taking care of myself in order to further help others. I have learned to lead by following my values, and as a leader in the future, I will always value equality, diversity, respect, and honesty.
Through the multiple community projects I have completed in the Honors Program, I have grown as a citizen and community member. I was able to put my values into action through community service. I was also able to choose organizations that I personally wanted to help but did not have time to in the past. I have met many caring, interesting, and different people during these projects, yet we all shared a common interest in solving a community problem. In the future, I will continue to be active in my community and help others in need through my professional career as well.
The Honors Program has helped me develop into a well-rounded individual and follow my passions effectively. I hope to continue this growth throughout my lifetime and future careers. I believe it is imperative that society continues to learn and grow from knowledge and experiences in order to progress towards a better future for everyone.
