SHE WAS HIS SICKNESS AND THE CURE
I thought I’d write a little story about an insomniac war doctor with addiction issues and a kink for sedation and white asparagus, however it turned into so much more. Inspired by 9/11, a soul searing romance I’ve been thinking about for years, and the sickening truth that almost ALL of war’s victims are ordinary people, Dr. Cole Fox’s journey to redemption became so much more than an amuse bouche for me to nibble on weekends.
I became fascinated by the volunteers and medical folks and peace warriors involved in humanitarian aid. I began to wonder about drugs and medicines and rogue profits. About mothers and women, the beauty we hide and promote. The steps we take, how we treat ourselves before a romance ever begins.
A recurring theme kept cropping up. Your biggest strength is often your biggest weakness. I was thinking about poppies and morphine, fighting over resources that make a few rich and many very poor.
In the center of all of these musings was Cole Fox. How does recursion effect a haunted man with good in his heart, but a past no one should ever share? A culture rich in traditions, but sexist to the core? I was hooked. Research and connecting with people in Afghanistan consumed me, and I can only hope readers love Cole as much as I do.
Below is just a little taste to savor, as would Cole.
A genre-busting literary romance that intersects with true events at a war-torn hospital in Afghanistan.
Dr. Nicolas Fox, a gifted anesthesiologist, world famous for his work in conflict zones, harbors dark secrets. Cole finds his detached methods for coping begin to unravel with unintended consequences and death when he falls for his mysterious new neighbor. He's torn between embracing their connection or destroying it. As his grim past reveals itself, she can never know his dark life. Can he know hers?
A battle for love born out of recovery and loss, bound in obsession and memory.
I love reading and writing about fractured souls, the comfort they seek, and the broken people they love and torture. Suspense, medicine and romance move me, and I love to read stories set amidst modern times that magnify our differences. In my own work, I explore the distance between solitary lives of longing and safety and the connected lives of those who expose their flaws and let their vulnerability bleed out.
