The EBM Framework can be applied to multiple contexts in a number of ways. Below are past and ongoing case studies that are using the EBM Framework.
Please note that the EBM Initiative and Framework are NOT currently DFO Policy
The BELT Project (Blue Economy Lobster Project) is in line research approaches to develop more comprehensive advice on the sustainability of the Lobster fishery in the context of a Blue Economy, and Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM). EBM was the dominant lens through which the participatory research was theorized, communicated and organized.
An initial case study application of the framework has been completed for the establishment process of St. Anns Bank, an Oceans Act Marine Protected Area.
In the Oceans and Ecosystems Science Divison (OECD), Science, the EBM Framework objectives are being used to look at the entire scope - past, present and future - of lobster science including policy and legislation over time (e.g., Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP)).
The Integrated Planning Team from the Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program, Ecosystem Management, are focused on using EBM to develop the St. Mary's River (Napu'saqnuk) ESA case study.

In partnership with the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) National Core Program, student in the Master's of Marine Management program at Dalhousie is exploring how the EBM framework could be used to inform DFO's approach to AIS biosecurity.
