Ed was a family man, business man, model railroader, boater, world traveler and musician.
After playing trumpet in the Marine Corps Band, he had an opportunity to play professionally but being on the road was no way to raise a family so he chose to stay home and focus on family and career. While he never played in a band, he kept his trumpet close and frequently played along with Dizzy Gillespie and other records. How good was he? He warmed up on Flight of the Bumble Bee!
One of his other passions was model railroading (see YouTube videos below or look up Stonewood Junction)
Later in life he discovered the Royal Oak Concert Band and Woodward Ave Jazz Orchestra where he played for several years. He found his permanent musical home with a small jazz band who played at the Bloomfield Hills Senior Center. Through his musical talent and outstanding personality, he became the leader of this fine group which is now known as the Ed Black Jazz Band.
You are missed! Ed Black was my dad.
Signed Larry Black, son (and professional Trombone player and guest musician because my dad taught me)
