Eric is currently a music teacher in the Crestview Local School District located in Columbiana, Ohio. His responsibilities include directing the 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, and high school concert and marching bands (grades 8 through 12), teaching Theatre Explorations, and teaching The Understanding of Music and Music As A World Phenomenon, two College Credit Plus Courses through Kent State University. He is also the coordinator of the theatre program which produces at least one full scale musical each year in March. Outside of his work at Crestview, Eric is the director of the Canfield Community Concert Band and is a doctoral candidate pursuing a Ph.D in music education at Kent State University.
Eric received his Bachelors of Music in Music Education at Slippery Rock University in May of 2010, graduating Summa Cum Laude. While at Slippery Rock he participated in numerous performing ensembles including the Slippery Rock Marching Pride, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, Concert Choir, Trombone Choir, and Tuba-Euphonum Ensemble. His primary teachers were Brian Meixner, Stephen Barr, and Nanettte Solomon.
He earned his Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducing at Youngstown State Univeristy's Dana School of Music in May of 2013. He served as a Graduate Assistant in the Band Department where he assisted with the YSU Marching Pride and other ensembles. His duties also included aiding in he logisical and organizational aspects of the band program. Throughout his experiences at YSU, Eric had the opportunity to rehearse and conduct the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, University Band, Pep Band, and Chamber Winds, which included Woodwind Ensembles, Brass Ensembles, and a British style Brass Band. He performed as a member of the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, University Band, and Tuba Euphonium Ensemble and assisted with the YSU chapter of the Ohio Collegiate Music Education Association. His prrimay teachers were Stephen Gage and Brandt Payne.
Eric is currently pursuing his Ph.D in Music Education at Kent State University with an intended completion date of Fall 2024. As a doctoral candidate, his research focuses on the motivation of students attending rural schools and the democratization of the large ensemble classroom experience. While at Kent State he has conducted numerous studies and presented at the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference, the National Association for Music Education Conference, and the International Society for Music Education World Conference. He has also performed with the Kent State University Wind Ensemble and studied Contemporary Commercial Voice. His primay teachers are Jay Dorfman, Craig Resta, and Wendy Matthews.
Eric began giving private music lessons to middle school students while attending Columbiana High School. After his high school graduate he was hired as the brass instructor for Leetonia High School where he assisted at band camp. After his first year of college, Eric was hire as the assistant marching band director at both Columbiana and Leetonia High Schools where he split time working at band camps, attending events, and visiting the concert bands when time permitted.
Eric completed his student teaching in the Bulter Area School District and the Blackhawk School District, both of which are located in Western Pennsylvannia. In the Butler school district, he was assigned to two elementary schools where he taught beginning band and orcheatra and taught small group and private lessons on all woodwind, brass, percussion and string instruments. In the Blackhawk school district, Eric taught 7th grade group and private lessons, 8th grade band, 8th grade music technology, 8th grade music history, and high school band.
His first full time teaching position was in the McDonald Local School District. In this position, Eric taught 5th and 6th grade group lessons, 7th grade band, combined 7th grade and high school choir, 7th grade music appreciation, high school band, and 7th grade through 12th grade jazz band. During this time He also taught piano lessons at Motter's Music, now Music and Arts in Canfield, Ohio.
As a graduate assistant at Youngstown State University Eric had the opportunity to teach and conduct the wind ensemble, concert band, university band, chamber ensembles including a double woodwind quintet and a British style brass band, and music classes for elementary education majors. During his time at YSU he also worked with the Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra where he served as the brass instructor where he ran sectional rehearsals and arranged pieces for brass ensemble performances. After his graduation, he briefly served as the interm pep band director.
