Who made the first Easter cruffin? When was the Easter cruffin invented?
✨✨ My Story of the Easter Cruffin.
By Liudmyla Vu 👩🍳
In 2016, I began experimenting with a pastry that fascinated me - the cruffin. At the time, it was already becoming popular in bakeries around the world. The idea of combining the delicate layers of laminated dough with a beautiful spiral shape immediately caught my attention.
👇 I started baking small cruffins in muffin molds, carefully rolling the dough thin, layering it with butter, and twisting it into elegant spirals. Each batch was a small experiment. I wanted to understand how the layers behaved, how the spiral opened during baking, and how to create the most beautiful shape.
Watching the dough rise in the oven was magical. The layers slowly separated, forming delicate curves and soft golden spirals.
Soon the kitchen was filled with trays of golden cruffins. Some I dusted with powdered sugar, others I decorated with cream or jam. Each pastry had its own personality - slightly different spirals, different layers, different textures.
But something in my mind kept telling me that this technique could become something more than just a pastry.
In 2017, as Easter approached, I had an idea.
What if the beautiful cruffin technique could be applied to traditional Easter bread?
Instead of a small pastry, I imagined a tall festive loaf, baked in a traditional Easter mold. I adapted the dough, keeping it rich and soft like classic paska, but shaping it using the spiral layering technique I had been experimenting with.
The result was something completely new - a tall Easter bread with delicate visible layers, a beautiful spiral structure, and a soft, buttery crumb.
👩🍳 🍞 I called it Paska-Cruffin.
The first recipe was published on March 17, 2017, on my YouTube channel Luda Easy Cook. Very quickly, the idea spread among home bakers. You can watch the original recipe here:

People loved the dramatic layered look and the elegant simplicity of finishing the bread with just powdered sugar.
Since then, many variations have appeared, but the original inspiration came from those early kitchen experiments with spiraled dough and laminated layers.
✨✨ For me, the Easter Cruffin is more than just a recipe.
It is a reminder that creativity in the kitchen often begins with curiosity, patience, and the joy of watching dough transform into something beautiful.
