Nine years after Chic's final 1983 album Believer, during which Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards had worked as songwriters and producers for artists such as David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran, Robert Palmer, and The B-52's, and the Chic back catalogue and its musical legacy had been re-evaluated by both music critics and the general public, Edwards and Rodgers reunited for a long-awaited eighth Chic album and the following years would see the two touring the world with their new line-up of the band.

Les Plus Grands Succes de Chic/Chic's Greatest Hits [Atlantic, 1979]

Not as elegant conceptually as Risque, but a better party record for sure--in a music of six-minute cuts (actually, only three run over 4:42) a group this good has no trouble putting together a quality best-of after two years and three albums. Greil Marcus describes The Motown Story as "the history of James Jamerson's bass playing, on fifty-eight hits." This is the future of Bernard Edwards's on seven. And guess where Edwards learned his shit. A-

Tongue in Chic [Atlantic, 1982]

This is their groove album. Maybe their throwaway album as well, yet I enjoy it fine, because I get from Chic what devotees of Memphis soul used to get from Booker T. & the M.G.'s. Which group you prefer is partly a matter of which rhythms feel like life to you, of course, so I'll add that like New York these are pretty swift. I'll also add that their in-concert theme song makes me wonder what the live album might be like. A-

Believer [Atlantic, 1983]

Although you'd figure the collaboration would suffer after both Nile and Nard started coming up with good albums of their own, the damage is amazingly slight. The title track, a true song of faith ("Stand back-to-back, believer/Meet head-to-head/Fight toe-to-toe, believer/Dance cheek-to-cheek"), achieves the rough-minded positivity the rest of the album aims for. The true song of praise that comes next is every bit as believable. And the rest is blessing enough in this negative time. B+

That recognition in Europe--where Chic was highly regarded as a creative unit--enabled Rodgers and Edwards to build their individual production careers. Rodgers released two solo albums and a 1987 album with the group Outloud and became a veejay on VH-1. Edwards released a solo outing in 1983 and one with the rock-oriented group the Distance featuring ex-Chic drummer Tony Thompson in 1989.

Having last released a new record in 1992 in the form of Chic-ism, Rodgers spoke of his decision to release the album in 2017 as opposed to this year as being greatly impacted by the many bereavements that were suffered in 2016.

Nile Rodgers has confirmed further details about Chic's new album, following the news this week that the band had signed a new record deal with Warner Bros. and Parlophone. The record, which will be their first full-length in 23 years, following 1992's Chic-ism, will be out in June. While its title hasn't yet been revealed, two tracks off the album, 'I'll Be There' and 'Back In The Old School', will be released on April 20. The former was inspired by Rodgers' bandmate Bernard Edwards who passed away in 1996. Says Rodgers: "1996 may seem like a long time ago, but it feels like yesterday to me... as well as an eternity. The name of the song is 'I'll Be There'. The reason is: after I found Bernard's body, I said to him, 'Now, I can be there for you in death, the way you were there for me in life.'"

As our recently appointed Chief Creative Advisor, Nile has made Abbey Road Studios his UK creative base for the new album and today sees the release of the first official single, Till The World Falls.

Nile Rodgers & Chic gave Abbey Road Studios a first taste of what to expect from the new album when they joined Jools Holland for Later last week to perform alongside Mura Masa and Cosha, on Till The World Falls, with NAO on Boogie All Night, as well as Chic classics, I Want Your Love and Good Times.

There are many fans of Chic that will dismiss this album and in some respects they are correct to as for me Chic will never be the same without both Nile and Bernard at the helm but the essence of Chic does run through despite it being a little patchy in consistency.

This album is a modern twist on the ethos of Chic and I still believe this is very much a Chic album because Nile Rodgers is all about Chic in everything he does with his live performances and other artists. The Chic organisation lives on and this is a nice little addition to that legacy. be457b7860
