15 local community groups and many residents came together for a wonderful display of community spirit, showing their common desire for action over the climate emergency and its many related social issues. We saw brilliant performances from the choirs Natural Voices and Raised Voices and the Orchestrated Discontent Band, a Discobedience dance routine, speeches, local groups’ outreach stalls, storytelling for children, family picnic mats, spontaneous clothes mending, all catering for a cross-generational community gathering.
For the main activity of the event, we asked Waltham Forest residents to share their hopes and fears by writing them on colourful paper shapes. They then hung them up on both sides of an image of planet Earth between the lime trees, previously saved, by the persistence of the local community, from being felled to make way for the controversial re-development of the square.
