To use Earth Alerts, you simply select the specific natural hazards -- earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, tropical cyclones, wildfires, landslides, severe weather, local weather, etc. -- and the locations that interest you. The application will then automatically retrieve the latest information from various live data feeds available on the Internet and present it to you in a convenient arrangement of reports, maps and images.

Much More than a weather monitoring program

Earth Alerts includes basic weather tracking features such as National Weather Service alerts, current conditions, local forecasts and radar/satellite imagery. Note that this program does not provide the most extensive weather data or "fanciest" weather related imagery compared to what is available online. If weather information is all you're interested in, then Earth Alerts is probably NOT for you. There are many comprehensive applications, web browser add-ins, and websites available for monitoring weather. Guess what? I use some of them myself!

NOTE from WRI: WRI decided to stop updating FORMA alerts. The goal wasto simplify the Global Forest Watchuser experience and reduce redundancy. We found that Terra-i andGLAD were more frequently used. Moreover, using GLAD as a standard, found that Terra-i outperformedFORMA globally.

FORMA alerts are detected using a combination of two MODISproducts: NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and FIRMS(Fires Information for Resource Management System). NDVI updates areprocessed every 16 days, while fire updates are processed daily. Modelsare developed individually for each ecogroup to relate the two inputs tothe area of clearing, using the Hansen annual tree cover loss data to trainthe model. The minimum threshold to qualify as an alert is 25% of the pixelcleared, though thresholds vary by ecogroup to minimize false positives. Here is an example scriptfor a quick introduction to the FORMA datasets.

Earthquakes happen daily around the world, with hundreds of millions of people living in earthquake prone regions. An early warning can help people prepare for shaking, but the public infrastructure to detect and alert everyone for an earthquake is costly to build and deploy. We saw an opportunity to use Android to provide people with timely, helpful earthquake information when they use Google search, and a few seconds warning to get themselves and their loved ones to safety if needed.

In California, Washington, and Oregon, we partner with the ShakeAlert team to distribute alerts provided by their system. ShakeAlert uses a network of 1675 seismic sensors to detect earthquake shaking, and analyzes that data to determine the location and size of the earthquake. The ShakeAlert system then sends a signal to Android Earthquake Alerts System, which then sends an earthquake alert directly to Android users.

Tapping on either of the alerts will present Earthquake safety information, which consists of simple steps that you can take to keep yourself safer after an earthquake. It also provides a detailed map of an early estimate of the earthquake location and magnitude.

Severe geomagnetic storms can disturb the electrical grid, but power operators take precautions in response to NOAA warnings and alerts. Spacecraft in low Earth-orbit may experience increased drag leading to tracking problems. Position and navigation using satellite signals like GPS may be disrupted, primarily in the polar regions, but the impact can extend into mid-latitudes. HF (high frequency) radio communications can also be disturbed, and depending on the magnitude of the storm, the impacts can last for days. High-frequency radio disruptions can hinder the work of airlines, emergency managers, radio amateurs and others.

(Note: ESA has expanded the coverage of Sentinel-1A after the Sentinel-1B anomaly in early 2022. The coverage for RADD alerts (humid tropics)

almost back to normal with a minor gap in the norther Amazon. ESA plans an early launch of Sentinel-1C)

If you live in or travel to areas that could be impacted by an earthquake, preparation is vital, as these events can strike suddenly, at any time, with little warning. Visit My Hazards to see if you live or work in an area prone to earthquakes.

The proposed EO-ALERT architecture is enabled by on-board processing, recent improvements in processing hardware using Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components, and persistent space-to-ground communications links. EO-ALERT combines innovations in the on-board elements of the data chain and the communications, namely: on-board reconfigurable data handling, on-board image generation and processing for the generation of alerts (EO products) using Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), on-board AI-based data compression and encryption, high-speed on-board avionics, and reconfigurable high data rate communication links to ground, including a separate chain for alerts with minimum latency and global coverage.

Stratospheric ozone depletion threatens us with enhanced ultraviolet radiation at the earth's surface, which can be damaging or lethal to many life forms. Air pollution near ground level, and acid precipitation, are already causing widespread injury to humans, forests, and crops.

The irreversible loss of species, which by 2100 may reach one-third of all species now living, is especially serious. We are losing the potential they hold for providing medicinal and other benefits, and the contribution that genetic diversity of life forms gives to the robustness of the world's biological systems and to the astonishing beauty of the earth itself.

The earth is finite. Its ability to absorb wastes and destructive effluent is finite. Its ability to provide food and energy is finite. Its ability to provide for growing numbers of people is finite. And we are fast approaching many of the earth's limits. Current economic practices which damage the environment, in both developed and underdeveloped nations, cannot be continued without the risk that vital global systems will be damaged beyond repair.

We the undersigned, senior members of the world's scientific community, hereby warn all humanity of what lies ahead. A great change in our stewardship of the earth and the life on it is required, if vast human misery is to be avoided and our global home on this planet is not to be irretrievably mutilated.

Every august they remove the last year band from the project (when I asked this question it was 2019). If you still want to use other years alerts you can find them under the following project in earthengine : =projects/glad/alert/2019final

It's essential that our forecasts and alerts adhere to international standards. Strengthened by regional partnerships and bolstered by advanced tools and training, we're dedicated to enabling every nation to issue round-the-clock warnings. Our commitment isn't just about predicting severe weather events; we also emphasize the associated dangers. Such detailed insights equip communities to effectively brace themselves, safeguarding residences, infrastructure, and their environment.

In the absence of action by the industry and the Government, Mighty Earth has created what is in essence a publicly available joint monitoring mechanism: The Cocoa Accountability Map, first published in January of 2020. Our intention is to encourage all stakeholders to use this map to end deforestation by responding to alerts, and meet their strong commitments to traceability and transparency with the hope that this move towards openness will spread throughout the country, and to other major cocoa producers like Ghana and Cameroon.

A team led by Dr. Pooya Rahimian produced a computer model of a busy highway to investigate the use of loud cell phone alerts to inform pedestrians who were approaching an unsafe intersection while texting.

This is consistent with previous research which demonstrated that it is difficult for the brain to stop actions once they have been initiated. In addition, the pedestrians in the warning group spent less time observing the traffic, indicating that they were relying too much on the cell phone alerts. e24fc04721
