Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman, is one of the original X-Men and among the most powerful mutants of his generation. Gifted with the ability to manipulate ice and cold, Bobby’s journey took him from a childhood of secrecy and shame about his powers, to becoming a founding member of the X-Men, to later serving as a secret agent investigating threats to both mutants and humanity. Despite his cheerful and playful demeanor, Bobby has struggled with self-acceptance, loneliness, and the heavy responsibility of being a mutant in a divided world.
Bobby Drake grew up in Tipano, New York, where he discovered his mutant powers as a child. From an early age, he enjoyed creating small sculptures of ice in secret, aware that his parents feared and despised mutants. His family associated mutation with shame and danger, especially after hearing news of other mutant incidents. Because of this, Bobby hid his powers from the world. The first person Bobby ever revealed his abilities to was his best friend, whom he secretly admired and cared for deeply. To show his affection, Bobby crafted an ice rose that would never melt, but his gesture ended in heartbreak when it was quickly destroyed. This moment reinforced his sense of isolation and the need to conceal his gifts.
Bobby’s life changed when Professor Charles Xavier recruited him as part of the original class of mutants who would become the X-Men. As Iceman, Bobby began to embrace his abilities, using his gift to create ice constructs and manipulate his environment in battle. Alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Safeguard, and Angel, he became one of the First Class of X-Men, fighting to protect a world that feared and hated them.
Despite his lighthearted personality, Bobby often struggled with insecurity, comparing himself to his teammates and questioning his place in the team.
After the X-Men disbanded, Bobby sought isolation and spent nearly a year alone in Antarctica, where he coordinated a watch center in the newly discovered Savage Land at Professor X’s request.
During this time, Bobby studied Xavier’s theories and encountered a community of native mutants whose civilization predated humanity. These mutants lived peacefully, isolated from the violent conflicts of the outside world. When Bobby eventually returned, he found a drastically changed reality: human and mutant extremism had escalated, and Magneto had taken control of Genosha, using mutants as slaves while expelling the local population with his militia, the Acolytes.
During this chaotic period, Bobby was contacted by Valerie Cooper to lead an investigation into the secretive organization known as “The Right.” This extremist group had infiltrated global politics and was responsible for targeting mutants. Bobby’s first mission was deeply personal: he prevented the suicide of young mutant Julio Richter (Rictor), who had been manipulated and weaponized by “The Right.”
From that moment forward, Bobby took Rictor under his protection, giving him a safe place to live and training him while unraveling the larger conspiracy behind the group. Through his work with X-Factor Investigations, Bobby became entangled in a web of threats involving Mr. Sinister, Bastion, the Acolytes, Magneto, and Operation Zero Tolerance, all of which pushed him further into the role of a spy, protector, and investigator rather than simply a frontline hero.
