Warren Worthington III is one of the original members of the X-Men, a wealthy philanthropist, and a mutant whose primary power is a pair of natural, feathered wings that grant him the ability to fly. His life has been marked by a struggle with his mutation, its physical alteration into metallic wings by the villain Apocalypse (leading to his persona Archangel), and his subsequent emotional and mental trauma.
Warren Worthington III was born into a life of privilege and immense public fortune. He is an heir, a successful businessman, and an entrepreneur. His mutation, which manifested as white, feathered wings, was initially a source of emotional difficulty. He was filled with shame, hypocrisy, and self-loathing regarding his mutant nature. His mother, attempting to hide the truth, suggested therapy and treatments that Warren believed would help him "get rid" of his mutation. Xavier, the founder of the X-Men, understood that removing Warren from his privileged environment was key. Warren eventually joined the First Class of students at the Institute, becoming one of the founding members of the X-Men.
Warren remained a hero, working alongside the X-Men until his graduation. After graduating, he decided to leave the X-Men to pursue his own path. He chose to work as a vigilante in the countryside, aiding marginalized mutants while simultaneously taking over the family business.
A few months after leaving the team, Warren began making visits to the newly discovered underground mutant community known as the Morlocks. He sought to protect these isolated wanderers, but this brought him into a violent conflict.
A group of "violent and murderous mutants" known as the Marauders invaded the Morlocks' refuge. Warren tried to defend them but was quickly overwhelmed and bricked out by one of the gang members. The "fiercest member" of the Marauders (later known to be Sabretooth) attacked Warren, ripping the natural, feathered wings off his back with his bare claws. The agonizing experience culminated in the attacker's "maniac laughter" as Warren lay in pain.
The massacre was abruptly interrupted by a bolt of lightning, which announced the arrival of Storm (a former X-Men leader), who had descended from the skies. Storm revealed she had a shared past with the leader of the Marauders. She took the severely wounded Warren back to the Institute.
Warren spent several weeks in recovery. It's implied that his mutation was so traumatically damaged that it could not recover naturally. While still recovering and brooding over his loss, he was approached by Apocalypse who "offered a pact." This pact led to the transformation where his natural wings were replaced with sharp, metallic wings and his skin turned a dark blue, taking on the persona of Archangel. He subsequently betrayed the mutant and warned the X-Men about his world's domiantion plan.
To not be found by Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister, Warren became part of the mutant team X-Force, who would travel around the world working as mutant mercenaries and operating in secret operations for Charles Xavier.
