Impressed by Bill’s potential, Van Dyne recruited him as his assistant at his technology company.
Bill’s loyalty was tested early on when Professor Vernon uncovered a traitor within his scientific team — Dr. Elihas Starr. Starr had been secretly attempting to sell their groundbreaking discovery, a new form of matter: the Pym Particles. When confronted, Starr revealed himself but managed to escape by triggering a catastrophic Pym Particle collider explosion. The blast had devastating consequences: Bill was left in a vegetative state for months, fighting for his life while his mind and body were forever altered by exposure to the unstable particles.
When Bill awoke, he was told of the accident’s impact: the explosion had rewired his body, fusing it with Pym Particles in a way unlike anyone before him. While the mutation nearly destroyed him, his willpower pushed him to adapt, ultimately granting him the ability to grow to colossal sizes with efficiency that surpassed even Hank Pym himself.
Nick Fury later revealed that the same explosion also mutated a living organism — a tardigrade. While the creature could not control its transformation and had to be contained, Bill’s unique adaptability allowed him to survive and thrive. After the death of her father in the same explosion, Janet grew close to Bill, considering him like a younger brother.
