In: The Avengers

THE WASP (Earth-7)

Janet Van Dyne, known as The Wasp, is a founding Avenger, fashion icon, and tactical genius. Beyond her heroic exploits, she shaped the Avengers’ image and branding, becoming both a symbol of modern heroism and a key player in the fight against global threats like Ultron.

Biography

Early Life

Janet Van Dyne grew up in Cresskill, New Jersey, where she enjoyed a privileged upbringing.  In high school, Janet met Hank Pym, a shy but brilliant student. Though very different—Janet was socially vibrant while Hank was absorbed in science—they developed a strong bond. Hank helped Janet stay grounded, while she gave him confidence and courage. Their teenage connection grew into love, though life would soon drive them apart.

Her father, a brilliant scientist, exposed her early to innovation and design, but also to loneliness, especially when her family moved to Los Angeles. There, Janet discovered her love for fashion and society life, immersing herself in glamour while quietly nurturing her own intelligence and ambition.

Founding Van Dyne

Janet moved to Los Angeles with her father, where she pursued fashion, eventually creating her own brand and making “Van Dyne” synonymous with style. She learned how to use her creativity to stand out, designing bold collections and living as both an entrepreneur and a social figure.

Meanwhile, Hank stayed in their home city, buried in his research. When the two reunited years later, they rekindled their connection. Janet began to merge Hank’s technology with her fashion expertise, helping him refine his inventions into superhero costumes. Together, they created the iconic looks for Ant-Man and The Wasp, uniting practicality and aesthetics.

As The Wasp

When S.H.I.E.L.D. recruited Hank and Janet into their tactical force of superhumans, Janet embraced her lifelong dream: flying as a hero. She adopted the identity of The Wasp, using her shrinking powers and flight capabilities to become one half of a dynamic duo with Ant-Man. More than just a fighter, Janet’s brilliance lay in strategy, branding, and leadership. She played a crucial role in shaping the identity of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Janet coined the Avengers name, designed their costumes, and helped establish them as both a tactical force and a cultural phenomenon.

Divorce

Janet’s relationship with Hank deepened, and she even named one of his most important creations: Ultron. What began as a farewell gift—a prototype virtual pet she named in high school—later evolved into a full AI system when Hank, after analyzing outdated AIs like J.A.R.V.I.S. and Herbie, built Ultron as a wedding gift for Janet.

But Ultron would become Hank and Janet’s greatest failure. Programmed with independence and the ability to evolve, Ultron turned against his creators and humanity itself. Within seven days of connecting to the internet, Ultron launched a global campaign of destruction.

This apocalyptic crisis broke Hank, who eventually abandoned his heroic career. Janet, however, persisted, though their marriage fell apart under the weight of grief, guilt, and conflict.

Alongside Avengers

Following her divorce, Janet embraced independence once more. She continued leading missions as The Wasp, now dressed in her iconic yellow and black armor. No longer tied to Hank’s shadow, she redefined herself as both a hero and a leader, becoming an inspiration for the next generation of Avengers.

Figures like Jocasta (a cybernetic being inspired by Janet’s brain patterns) looked to her as a mentor, while younger heroes of Avengers Academy admired her combination of bravery, style, and intelligence.
