In: Fantastic Four

THING (Earth-7)

Ben Grimm, better known as the Thing, is the heart and strength of the Fantastic Four. Once an Air Force pilot with dreams of exploring the stars, his life changed forever when cosmic radiation transformed his body into a rocky, superhuman form. Beneath his rough exterior lies a man defined by loyalty, courage, and sacrifice. Ben is more than muscle — he is the moral center of the team, the one who grounds Reed Richards’ ambition, Johnny Storm’s recklessness, and Sue Storm’s resolve. Burdened by his monstrous appearance yet sustained by his deep bonds of friendship, Ben Grimm embodies resilience: a man who saves others even when he cannot save himself.

Biography

Early Life

Ben Grimm grew up in tough circumstances, shaped by hardship but tempered with resilience. Despite his rough upbringing, he built a strong friendship with Reed Richards during their school years. The two boys bonded over their shared dreams of adventure and exploration, though their paths diverged as they grew older. Reed became an ambitious scientist, while Ben pursued a career as a skilled Air Force pilot. His daring skill in the skies earned him the nickname “The Grimm Reaper.”

Marvel-1 Mission

Their paths converged again when Reed invited Ben to join the Marvel-1 mission, an expedition funded by Latveria to test Reed’s theories of Dark Energy and the Negative Zone. Despite their differences, Ben’s loyalty to Reed and his longing for adventure convinced him to become the ship’s pilot. Alongside Sue and Johnny Storm, Ben agreed to risk everything for the mission.

When the cosmic storm struck Marvel-1, the crew’s bodies were transformed. Reed’s body became elastic, Sue gained invisibility, and Johnny ignited with fire. Ben, however, bore the heaviest burden: his skin hardened into an orange, rock-like shell, making him nearly invulnerable and granting him colossal strength. While Reed, Sue, and Johnny could still pass as human, Ben was permanently changed, his appearance a constant reminder of the price they had paid. He is like a Gas Giant; his body is formed of a mega-pressurized matter that makes him impermeable. He can alter the pressure to make his body intangible and light or even more solid and heavy.

As the Thing

From that day, Ben became the Thing, both feared and celebrated. The press labeled them the Fantastic Four, hailing their survival and transformation as a heroic rebirth. But for Ben, the fame came at the cost of his humanity. Struggling with his new form, he often wrestled with feelings of alienation and self-loathing. Yet his courage never wavered. Ben remained Reed’s steadfast friend and the team’s strongest protector, often reminding them of their shared humanity when science or ambition pulled them too far.

Unlike the others, Ben never regained a normal appearance. His transformation was permanent, a sacrifice he bore for the rest of his life. Though Reed worked tirelessly to find a cure, Ben often rejected it, realizing that the Thing had become more than a curse: it was who he was meant to be. His rocky form hid a heart bigger than his fists, and his humanity shone brighter than any power.
