PLASTIC MAN (Earth-7)

Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, once a small-time crook and struggling father in Gotham, stumbled into his extraordinary powers after a bizarre accident at Ace Chemicals. Gaining elastic abilities from exposure to a radioactive compound, he reinvented himself as Plastic Man—a chaotic, elastic antihero whose powers are matched only by his eccentricity.

Biography

Early Life

Patrick O’Brian’s life began with hardship. After being kicked out of his home by his ex-wife for failing to pay child support, Patrick struggled to provide for his son, Luke. The criminal world of Gotham was becoming less profitable and more dangerous, with drug dealers paying less and Batman always looming over small-time crooks.

With few options, Patrick worked as a pickpocket, often scraping by in Gotham’s already marginalized districts. Eventually, he accepted an offer from Woozy Winks, a kindhearted but odd former Arkham Asylum patient. Woozy was looking for a roommate and offered Patrick a cheap apartment. Despite Woozy’s eccentricities—and the strange rule against keeping pets—the two became close friends.

Origin

Later, Ace Chemicals began hiring night guards. Both Patrick and Woozy applied, and while working the night shift, they were exposed to a radioactive compound. This accident changed Patrick forever: while Woozy tragically lost his life, Patrick survived and discovered he had gained extraordinary elastic abilities. His body could stretch, reshape, and contort in impossible ways, effectively making him indestructible and versatile.

Seizing this opportunity, Patrick rebranded himself. Using a pair of flashy sunglasses and a red gymnastics leotard he bought from a garage sale, he created his new persona: Plastic Man. The outfit wasn’t glamorous, but it worked, especially when combined with oil and talcum powder to prevent chafing during his stretching feats.

As Plastic Man

His first public act as a superhero was ironically tied to his old criminal habits. After sabotaging a school bus’s brakes, Patrick then “heroically” saved it, thrusting himself into the spotlight. Gotham Gazette journalist Vicki Vale dubbed him “Elongated Man.” However, due to trademark conflicts overseas, he soon settled on the name Plastic Man—a name that stuck.

From a petty crook barely surviving in Gotham to a bizarre hero defined by his elastic body and unpredictable mind, Patrick O’Brian transformed himself into one of the strangest yet most resourceful figures in Gotham’s chaotic world, until being invited by the philantropist Michael Holt to join his team of cosmonauts. He believed that Patrick's power could bend the 2nd dimension, and would be one of the keys to access the multiverse.
