We are fully committed to advancing climate action, resilience, and sustainability in Nigeria by restoring ecosystems, fostering a green climate, and supporting the shift to a low-carbon economy. We advocate for an environment free from gas flaring, oil spills, and illegal refineries, striving to create a healthier society. Our efforts focus on alleviating the hardships faced by communities affected by crude oil activities in Nigeria's oil-producing region, while championing a shift paradigm in how these communities engage with environmental conservation and economic development. By encouraging active community participation and collaboration, we aim to crowdsource innovative solutions and leverage crowdfunding to drive transformation, empower local populations, and accelerate progress in these impacted areas—ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
SUMMARY
The campaign seeks to urgently supply clean drinking water to children, women, and other vulnerable individuals in 20 communities in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, who are currently relying on water contaminated by oil spills. These communities are suffering from severe health issues, including cancer and other diseases related to petroleum exposure. The lack of functioning boreholes or alternative sources of safe drinking water has worsened the situation, leaving residents with no choice but to consume polluted water.
CHALLENGES
With more than 448 oil spill incidents occurring annually, the Niger Delta region has experienced devastating environmental destruction, severely impacting ecosystems and the livelihoods of oil-producing communities. The spills have heavily polluted vital water sources, including rivers, streams, and both groundwater and surface water, leaving these communities without access to clean water. Vulnerable groups such as children, women, the elderly, youth, and individuals with disabilities are the most affected, as they are forced to drink contaminated, "oily water," which poses serious health risks.
SOLUTION
EARN is committed to urgently launching a restoration initiative to address the hardships faced by oil-impacted communities by providing access to clean water. We aim to install potable water systems, boreholes, and water treatment facilities to deliver safe drinking water, which will significantly reduce health issues and waterborne diseases in these areas. We believe that improving access to clean water will not only save lives but also enhance the overall quality of life and living standards for the affected communities.
LONG-TERM IMPACT
EARN’s immediate intervention will not only address the health challenges and reduce diseases linked to oil-contaminated water but will also improve the overall quality of life and enhance the environment’s aesthetics. At EARN, we find joy not only in our own success but in seeing others thrive because of our efforts. Help us make a difference—help us help others. Thank you for your generous support and donations.
SUMMARY
EARN, in partnership with GlobalGiving, is working to raise funds to train 50 unemployed youths from Omoku in Nigeria’s Niger Delta in skills related to oil spill clean-up, farming, and fishing—industries that have been devastated by oil pollution. With 129 million Nigerians living in poverty and hunger, this training will equip these youths with valuable skills and provide employment opportunities. By offering alternative livelihoods, this initiative aims to address the root causes of youth unrest, criminality, and oil theft, giving these young people a positive path forward.
CHALLENGES
Out of Nigeria's 234 million people, 129 million are living in poverty and hunger, particularly in the oil-producing Niger Delta region, where communities have lost their livelihoods due to oil pollution. Omoku community alone hosts 207 out of the 416 oil wells in Rivers State. The youths in Omoku are unemployed, restless, and vulnerable to criminal activities such as oil theft and involvement in illegal refineries, which have further contributed to climate change and environmental degradation in the area. These youths lack the skills and opportunities needed to build their capacity and improve their lives.
SOLUTION
This project will provide training for 50 youths from Omoku in farming, fishing, and oil spill clean-up skills, helping to build their capacity and resilience. Led by the community, the project aims to alleviate hunger and poverty while enhancing the social and economic well-being of the participants. By equipping the trainees with valuable life skills, the project will empower them to become more responsible and engaged citizens.
LOND-TERM IMPACT
The long-term benefits of this initiative include increased employability for the youths, making them less susceptible to engaging in oil theft and vandalism. Climate action will be promoted through efforts to decarbonize the region and halt the illegal burning of crude oil, which contributes to cancer and other petroleum-related diseases. This project will also support environmental restoration and advance climate justice in the area.
