Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a substance produced by the wax glands in our ears. Comprising a blend of oil and sweat, it possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties. Its functions include repelling water, preventing dryness and itchiness of the skin, and trapping dust and germs to shield the eardrum.
While earwax is a normal secretion, it can accumulate and form into a plug. Several factors contribute to this buildup:
Some individuals naturally produce excessive earwax.
In older adults, wax can become drier and more prone to accumulation.
Anatomical factors such as a narrow or bendy ear canal, excessive ear canal hair, or abnormal bone growth within the ear canal (Exostosis) can contribute.
Wearing hearing aids or prolonged use of earplugs.
In some cases, the body's natural wax extraction system may not function effectively.
Symptoms of Earwax Buildup
Sudden, partial, or intermittent hearing loss
Discomfort, pain, or earache
Feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
Tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, sound of cicadas)
Dizziness or vertigoÂ
If you're experiencing severe symptoms, it's crucial to seek medical attention promptly. While these symptoms could be related to earwax buildup, they might also indicate another underlying ear condition requiring medical intervention. Contact your doctor if you have:
Severe pain in your ear that doesn't subside.
Fever or drainage from your ears.
Most patients find that applying 1-2 drops of olive oil at night, for 3-4 nights before an appointment, helps with wax removal.Â
Here's how to apply olive oil:
Lie down on your side with the affected ear facing upward.
Gently pull the outer ear backwards and upwards.
Use room temperature olive oil and a dropper to administer 1-2 drops into the ear canal. Massage the area gently in front of the ear.
Remain lying down for 10 minutes, then wipe away any excess oil. Do not insert cotton wool into your ear canal, as it will absorb the oil.
Repeat the procedure for the other ear if necessary.
*** Don't use olive oil or any other product in the ear if you have a ruptured ear drum. If you're not sure if you have a ruptured ear drum, see your doctor before using any remedy in your ear, including natural remedies. Don't place cotton swabs or any other object inside the ear to remove wax or relieve itching as it can irritate the ear canal and can perforate the ear drum.
