As mentioned in the art overview page, the majority of my focus with drawing has been on character illustrations. I thoroughly enjoy conveying different feelings through my designs, especially with character expressions. I have also spent a little bit of time learning the basic processes of various forms of 2D animation, including frame by frame, puppet animation, and mesh deform rigging. These processes require much more work than a standard sketch or even a fully colored and shaded piece, but when time permits, the level of life that they bring to your work can certainly be worth it.
What follows are examples of some of my illustration projects, both finished and unfinished, and some discussion about the various decisions I made and thoughts I had while working on them.
Character Reference Sheet - "Olen Eksyä Valaa"
On the left you are seeing one of my favorite character design projects I have undertaken as of recent. This character was designed specifically for my free-draw comic project to serve the role of protagonist. I knew based on the broader story I wanted to tell that this character needed to be simultaneously intense but vulnerable, and I am happy with how I conveyed that look with the combination of outfit and facial features. The character's hair style is inspired by Kurt Russell's character R.J. MacReady from The Thing (1982), and the scarf he wears around his face was inspired by a friend of mine from high school who was very good at drawing and always wore a striped scarf.
The design on the far left with the hood and mask up was created a while before the face underneath it. The first page of the comic (which uses that design) was created before this character sheet as a proof of concept. I found the process of having to create the face underneath all the gear very thought provoking. I found myself thinking about the perception of racecar drivers while they wear their racing overalls and helmets; they look like a part of the machine, but there is still a person underneath it who is thinking through each move they make.
I have also done a few experiments to test my illustration abilities in a further restricted environment. The three drawings below were made to test my ability to draw not only without a reference, but also under a tight time constraint. I also took suggestions from my friends as for what to draw.

7-5-2025, 7 minute character design inspired by rhinoceros beetles
