A year ago, my friends and I traveled to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. When I was researching the Durban leg of the trip, I saw a photo of a rickshaw on Golden Mile Beach and decided I had to find one when I got there and go for a ride.

The rickshaw was brought to Durban from London in 1893 by sugar magnate, Sir Marshall Campbell. At that time, there were only a few cars in the city. By 1902, Durban had approximately 1,700 rickshaws for more than 24,000 pullers who came to the city to work and returned home to the country with their earnings. Now, there are only about 20 registered pullers left.

Run by the Zulus, beautifully decorated rickshaws can be rented from pullers, who are dressed in colorful, handcrafted beaded headdresses and are usually stationed on the beach. They not only transport, they entertain in true Zulu fashion.

Female pullers are often attracted to the male-dominated profession through social media, which in turn has given some of them a strong local and international following. In addition to being physically strong, rickshaw pullers must have extensive knowledge of Tokyo and know how to engage tourists. Pullers walk or run an average of 20km (12 miles) a day. The most popular drivers make more than 1m yen (5,500) a month

Street photography is still very new to me but it has quickly become one of my favorite things to photograph. I felt like my time wandering through the streets of Mathura were full of so many amazing and different moments that it was sometimes hard to choose what to point my camera at.

These rickshaws are very popular to tour around the city. There seems to be quite a cut-throat business going on considering the number of offers we had to ride around on one. We preferred walking, partly because of the number of motorbikes around!

There are many ways to get around in Japan, one is to dress up in traditional costumes and find a healthy and fit young man to take you around the streets in a rickshaw. Some people do it for a hoot, others as a way to get familiar with the local area. I did not think these riders were the real deal, but they were enjoying themselves.

These rickshaws are all lined up in Georgetown waiting for the cruise liner to disembark it's passengers for the day. On the roads the rickshaw has priority over all traffic and they never stop even if entering a main road which makes for an interesting ride as a passenger!!!!

Colorful public transportation is the hallmark of Pakistani roads. Buses, trucks, vans, and rickshaws are adorned with loud colors and exotic designs. A pimped out vehicle is a matter of pride for the vehicle owner.

Since March last year, the charity has donated 17 electric rickshaws and is preparing to donate five more within the next two months, as well as providing training and licenses to the people offered them.

D-Lab is bringing Dr. Pradip Sarmah to MIT for two weeks, starting today, October 18th, 2010. In 2004, Dr. Sarmah founded Rickshaw Bank, an NGO that provides micro-finance to Indian rickshaw drivers. Over 90% of rickshaw drivers in India rent their rickshaws daily. For a daily payment equal to the rental fee, Rickshaw Bank makes it possible for drivers to own their rickshaws through a micro credit scheme that they developed for this market.

In addition to his interest in creating a business version of the Rickshaw Bank, Dr. Sarmah is involved in further development of the rickshaw market as well as other types of vehicle-based businesses, such as vegetable and fish sales, ready-to-eat food vending, and hand-cycle-based postal kiosks to be used by disabled people to sell stamps and other services.

Vishvas News (New Delhi): Vishvas News came across a picture being widely shared on various social media platforms. The picture is of a person standing in front of an auto rickshaw. It is being claimed by the users that the person seen in the picture is current Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde. However, Vishvas News in its investigation found that the person is not Maha CM Shinde but, founder president of Maharashtra Rickshaw Panchayat, Baba Kamble.

There was a puja in the month of Shravan at Raatrani Rikshaw stand.

Goa is famous throughout the world for its beaches and we were fortunate enough to have an extra day. Okay well, maybe the rickshaw needed a day or two to cool off after coming out of the mountains near Konya Wildlife Reserve. Either way, Goa was a great place to rest up before the final push.

While human rights activists have welcomed the move, the rickshaw pullers are dismayed.
