Any serious gamer knows that, after a certain budget level, it's preferable to create a gaming PC for the finest experience. What happens, though, if you travel frequently? Or perhaps you don't need a large tower PC but still want all the power? There are many of high-performance gaming laptops available for these situations and others. They can be pricey, but they are worthwhile. One such beast is the MSI Raider GE67 HX 12UHS, a 2022 high-end gaming laptop from MSI that replaces their GE66 series from the previous generation. The MSI Raider is a laptop with top-of-the-line specifications and a stunning look.
Build and Design Quality
One gaming laptop that immediately draws you in is the MSI Raider GE67 HX 12UHS. This performing monster appeals to the gamer in all of us and looks the part. The laptop's entire body was constructed using a combination of metal and plastic in different places. This results in a mixture that is both strong and enticing at the same time.
The laptop's top panel is constructed of metal and features the iconic MSI logo in the centre, along with extra MSI branding that has been laser engraved on the top left. This year's HX collection now includes a new laser engraving that is pretty stylish.
The bottom half of the panel separates and attaches to the laptop's bottom hinge. A slightly glossier and deeper shade of grey plates that join the sides of the hinge itself have a futuristic feel to it. The form of the bottom half itself also makes room for the back I/O ports, which have a good selection, but we'll speak about those in a moment.
The display itself has small bezels at the sides and top and a large one at the bottom, making it sufficiently thin. I would have preferred a 16:10 ratio here, but MSI didn't go for it. I bent the lid as far back as it would go, and it stopped at a respectable 140 degrees. However, it has a lid that opens with only one hand, which is convenient even for a laptop this size.
While the RGB functionality is also supported by the keyboard, the main RGB draw is the large light strip on the front of the laptop. The laptop's sides follow the same design principles and have exaggerated vents for aesthetic purposes. The two speakers are also located on the sides.
240Hz OLED Display
The majority of gaming laptops stick with OLED or displays with a high refresh rate. But MSI has blended the two aspects to produce an OLED display that operates at 240 hertz. The display is a 240 Hz panel with a QHD (25601440) resolution and an incredibly quick 0.2 ms reaction time. Contrary to many other firms, the display offers a pleasant peak brightness of 500 Nits, which feels more than adequate in all use circumstances. For those of you who are colour purists, MSI also provided a 100% DCI-P3 coverage with the Raider GE67 HX. I used the display primarily for gaming, work, and leisure, and I was impressed with each of these uses.
Throughout my time using the screen for gaming and entertainment, the experience was consistently good. The wide color gamut coverage showed in real-time as the colors remained vibrant and popped out. Whether it is going inside the horrors of the Oldest House in Control or watching Our Planet on Netflix, it was beautiful. While I felt the default setting was fine, MSI does provide the TrueColor software in the raider to make that lets you choose from various display modes including the sRGB color profile with adjustment for color values.
Since this is an OLED display with a rich contrast ratio, dark shots inside while consuming content felt pitch black and almost palpable. So if you’re someone who loves to repeat watch Polar on Netflix, this display is a dream for you.
Performance
When you spend this much money on a laptop, you should only expect the greatest, most competitive performance. And I was happy to learn that this is indeed the case. The massive 16-core Intel 12th Gen i9-12900HX processor and 165W NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti are both included in the MSI GE67 HX Raider. The two components' combined output of up to 220Watts is also the cause of the brick-like charger. On the memory side of things, you get a superfast combo of 32GB DDR5 RAM and a 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD.
Gaming
Now let's get to the meat of the issue, which is the Raider's main use case. I enjoy playing video games a lot. To be honest, perhaps a little bit too much. I ran a number of games on the MSI Raider GE67 HX in the same compulsive manner. I've chosen a good selection of AAA and E-Sport games that tax the hardware while looking fantastic. I also included a title for Ray Tracing because the laptop has an RTX GPU. I also made care to use the laptop's original QHD resolution (2560 x 1440) to get the full impact of its capabilities. What I discovered is this.
Audio Excellence
A decent listening experience should be provided by the dual 2x2W Dynaudio speakers that come with the MSI GE67 HX. The configuration has been skillfully concealed to the sides by MSI, giving it an attractive and practical blend. Although I could actually feel some bass coming from the speakers, the overall impact was fantastic.
Microphone and Webcam
The MSI Raider GE67's Full HD webcam caught me off guard because I'm so used to seeing 720p ones on laptops. The degree of clarity and sharpness is much higher on this Full HD webcam than what I often find on laptops. Better pictures and movies that handle light better and look lot better overall result from this. To say goodbye to IR scanning, keep in mind that this webcam is not a Windows Hello webcam.
Charger and Battery
A large 330W power brick and a 99.9 Whr battery are included with the MSI GE67 HX. With this laptop, one could anticipate an all-day battery life, but I knew that wouldn't be the case.
Is the MSI Raider GE67 HX the ultimate beast?
Beyond a certain price point, performance gaming takes over and the inexpensive is rendered obsolete. For gamers that want nothing less than the best, there is the MSI GE67 HX, a powerful competitor in the market. The MSI GE67 HX is a laptop that will eat anything you throw at it since it has a gorgeous 240Hz OLED screen and the newest CPU and GPU combination from Intel and Nvidia.
