Iodine oxoacids and their roles in sub-3 nm particle growth in polluted urban environments

Our work for the first time reports long-term observations of iodine oxoacids at two urban sites, revealing their ubiquitous presence in inland regions with peak concentrations (up to 0.1 pptv) in summer. Moreover, Iodic acid is identified as a notable contributor to sub-3 nm particle growth and particle survival probability.

Our work reports continuous nocturnal production of iodic acid (HIO3) in urban air. The production of HIO3 also implies reactive iodine cycling without photo-activation of precursors via iodine partitioning between gas- and particle-phase.
