WHAT IS DUSTRABBIT?
Dustrabbit Magazine is a forthcoming digital publication that brings together narrative-based creative writing and visual artwork in an anthology-style collection, focusing on fiction and comics created by self-defined emerging, underrepresented, and/or maginalised writers and artists. In particular, Dustrabbit encourages submissions from students, hobbyists, amateur creatives, as well as niche and indie writers and artists looking to share their work in a widely accessible online format, but will enforce as few barriers as possible to those interested in taking part. While based in Canada, submissions will be open to creatives from anywhere across the globe.
The Dustrabbit website will also include:
An accompanying blog that will feature writer/artist profiles, interviews, and project spotlights
A writer-artist community bulletin to share external opportunities relating to the focuses of the magazine, such as writing & art events and similar calls for submissions
A submission-based digital zine library to archive and share zine work (whether documented physical zines, e-zines, or experimental formats)
THE VISION
The hope for Dustrabbit is to create a welcoming, accessible, and supportive online connection point for writers and artists who want to share their work and find community among other creative folks and appreciators. Dustrabbit was created for people who feel lost, lonely, left out, or unsure when it comes to finding a place for their work and taking part in a publication—whether they've been self-publishing online for years, have submitted to dozens of magazines, or have never put their work out there before. Ideally, Dustrabbit will be a comfortable venue for amateur & indie creatives alike to share their work and build community with other writers, artists, and appreciators.
Dustrabbit is a volunteer passion project that will be facilitated and offered entirely for free. This means that creators will not be paid for their submissions at this point in time, but it also means there is no fee to submit or to access the magazine and website's content.
CONTENT DETAILS
Dustrabbit is looking for narrative-based art & writing, particularly short fiction and comics, but any narrative word-based and/or visual work is welcome, including experimental work or things that are unique to the digital realm (webcomics, hypertext work, interactive fiction, video games, work with audio/video components, etc). If you have a story to tell, we want to hear it.
Content will not be limited by genre or form, but future issues may be curated based on a given theme. For Issue 1, any kind of narrative is welcome, so long as the creators are comfortable with and the work complies with the few restrictions outlined below.
GUIDELINES
Dustrabbit is a queer-positive, BIPOC-allied, disability-allied, minority-uplifting, trans- and intersex-inclusive intersectional feminist publication. We believe in the human rights of folks of all genders, sexualities, races, cultures, religions, abilities, and socioeconomic situations. If that doesn't sit right with you, this publication is not for you.
You must be at least 18 years of age to submit. This is to reflect the scope of the publication’s content, which may include adult themes.
Erotica or work that may otherwise be considered explicit must be discussed with the editor before submission.
Fan works are allowed, but they must be clearly identified as such and original works will be given priority.
Work promoting hate, discrimination, or harm against vulnerable people will not be accepted. These themes and topics are not off the table for inclusion in fictional works, but they must be handled with care. The purpose of the publication is to welcome and support marginalised creatives and create a welcoming and safe environment for a diverse breadth of people—any work that goes against this mission will not be accepted.
