It seems fitting to me that “August” and “anchor” share so much—initals, syllables, punchy consonants, a sinking feeling. This time of year, the air here is thick, the sun curls close, and the days stick to each other like candy left in the car. Not my favourite time of year, but there are feasts for the soul and oases for the heart nestled all across this world of ours, pockets of glorious humanity that keep me going. I hope you’re all stumbling upon those little treasures, or seeking them out when they’re shy.
Some housekeeping: submissions for Dustrabbit Issue 1 have officially closed, and I am delighted at the submissions that have been sent in. Truly fantastic, exciting work. July came to me with lots of tall climbs and steep drops, and I’ve got some lingering vertigo, but here in the high noon of the summer, I’m starting to get my momentum back. Emails to contributors will be going out soon, and then I will be getting into the meat of the editing and assembly of our first issue (which will include some additional collaborative opportunities to take part—more on that soon).
There have been some wonderful new additions to the Zine Library! Thank you to Grayson Buckley and Nasta Martyn for sharing your work and joining Syd Llyric and myself on the shelves of our archive. Reading through and cataloguing those new entries was a lift to my spirits. Be sure to check out the Featured section of the Library to get a taste of the new additions!
And to conclude, a bit of transparency: as the sole facilitator of this project, and as a soft and sensitive creature just like all of you, things have been slower going than I initially had planned and wanted. I know there are no deadlines in all of this aside from the ones I create myself, but as I’m sure we all know, it sucks to have things go off course or fall idle, especially because of unforeseen circumstances or the mundane shifting terrain of life that can steal your footing. Summer trudges on, and so do I, but it’s been difficult.
However, I am so thankful for the contribution and support from those in the nebula of this project, and I am heartened to say that Dustrabbit, while a great big undertaking, is one of those pockets of glorious humanity that has helped me get through the hardest parts. So thank you, once again, and if you haven’t heard it lately, I’m glad you’re around. Congratulations on making it here, despite it all.
I’ll leave you with some of the words from the lovely minds that have helped me haul along my various anchors this summer—and as one final note, keep an eye on @dustrabbitmag on Instagram for updates and announcements regarding Issue 1, and the forthcoming collab endeavour I have stewing.
All the best to you and yours, reader. Joy be with you all.
