As a student I found some school subjects extremely stressful because I had undiagnosed learning disabilities. It wasn't until Grade 10 that I learned I was dyslexic and dysgraphic.
Once I was diagnosed, the supports I received made learning easier and more enjoyable. Just as importantly, I finally had an explanation for the challenges I had been facing. Understanding how I learned gave me the confidence to stop blaming myself and start building on my strengths.
That experience shaped my belief that every student deserves the opportunity to understand how they learn and to receive the support they need to succeed.
The OCDSB already recognizes that students shouldn't have to wait for a formal diagnosis before receiving help. Teachers and school staff provide interventions and accommodations as soon as learning needs are identified, and I strongly support that approach. Every student should receive support when they need it—not only after an assessment is completed.
At the same time, timely assessments remain critically important. They provide students, families, and educators with a clearer understanding of how a child learns, help identify the most effective long-term supports and accommodations, and give families the answers they have often been waiting years to receive.
Unfortunately, too many families still face long waits and uncertainty. I believe we need to be more ambitious in addressing this challenge. Rather than accepting delays as inevitable, the Board should be willing to explore creative, evidence-based solutions and new partnerships that can improve access to assessments and supports while making the best use of public resources.
As trustee, I will advocate for:
Earlier identification and support so students receive help as soon as learning needs are recognized.
Timely access to assessments that provide students, parents, and educators with the information they need to make informed decisions.
Innovative, evidence-based solutions that improve access to services and make the best use of available resources.
Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. My goal is to help build a school system that identifies challenges earlier, supports students sooner, and gives every child the chance to reach their full potential.
