Organisers: Giulia Celora (Oxford), Valeria Giunta (Swansea), Andrew Krause (Durham), and Denis Patterson (Durham).
Join us for a four-day symposium on the theory and application of mathematical models to biological systems where space and structure matter. From PDEs and agent-based models to multi-scale and mean-field approaches, this event will bring together theoretical and applied mathematicians interested in uncovering and validating biological insights in complex spatiotemporal systems. The event will feature short talks and discussion sessions to foster deep exploration of new ideas and new collaborations. Another primary goal of this symposium is to promote interaction between early-career and established researchers. Generous financial support from Durham University and the ICMS will enable broad and diverse participation from early-career researchers and researchers from low and middle-income countries.
Programme: You can find a preliminary schedule for the event here.
As space and financial support are limited, please fill out the application form below by March 31st, 2026, to apply to attend and/or receive financial support. We expect to contact applicants in early April with funding decisions and further registration details; the £20 registration fee will be waived for funded participants.
Application form: 🗓️ Apply here by 31st March 2026.

Thanks to generous support from the ICMS (as an ICMS@Durham event) and Durham University, which is funding this symposium as part of the long-running Durham symposia series, we will be able to offer travel and accommodation funding for some early-career researchers (with additional funding for those from developing countries). We can also offer support for caring costs, such as childcare, to help make the event as inclusive and accessible as possible. Please contact the organisers directly regarding support with caring or other related costs.
