In 2018, Anna Riling was in grad school for GIS, attending University of Denver entirely online. She couldn't meet her fellow students face to face, she was going through a career transition from geology to GIS, and she had no idea who was involved in GIS in the Durango area. She felt like she was in a geospatial vacuum. Who were her peers? What were they doing? Surely there were others interested in GIS in our tiny corner of Colorado. So she started the Durango GIS Group and we've been meeting semi-monthly ever since.
Anna Riling, Owner of Four Corners Mapping & GIS, started the Durango GIS Group in 2018.
There is no experience necessary to join the group! Just an interest in GIS, an open and inquisitive mind, and desire to engage in respectful and thought-provoking dialog with colleagues. The best way to stay up to date on events is to subscribe to the calendar or join the Google Group for email updates!

GIS Manager, San Juan County, NM
Born in Arizona, raised in the San Juan Mountains, and laying roots in Aztec, NM for the past four years. My name is Daniel Yohey and I manage the GIS programs at San Juan County, NM. My experience in the geospatial world is still growing and I look forward to connecting with members of this group to build a strong network. My first love of maps grew from looking at atlases with my grandfather as well as looking out the window of planes at the earth below. I’m passionate about data, descriptive visualizations, and conveying stories of our striking landscapes in the Four Corners using GIS. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors.

Attended Fort Lewis College with my BA in Environmental Studies and GIS Certificate. I’m excited to continue my career in the GIS world.
GIS Fun Fact: My first intro GIS course led me to my GIS program. GIS visually explained the No-DAPL pipeline project and who, what would be impacted. As a Native American, the software itself can provide a visual understanding when it comes to political aspects, land parcels, future developments and more.

GIS Fun Fact: I asked ChatGPT for a rap about GDAL:
The GDAL, it's a library, you see
For handling geospatial data, it's key
It can read and write, with ease
Formats like GeoTIFF and shapefiles, please
It's open source, so it's free
For developers, it's a gift indeed With Python bindings, it's oh so sweet
For GIS projects, it can't be beat
From raster to vector, it can translate
With tools for projection, it's first rate
With OGR, it's even more great
For vector data manipulation, it's first rate
The GDAL, it's a must have tool For GIS professionals, it's no fool
With its power and versatility, it's cool
The GDAL, it's the geospatial data abstraction library, rule!
