City plan in Roman times

A Google Earth image of Dura taken in 2011, with many of the principal features of the city picked out, including Sasanian siege works from the final battle for the city. The remains excavated were mostly of later Arsacid or Roman date (1st-3rd centuries AD). Except for the citadel and city walls, few traces survived of the original Seleucid garrison station or early expanded city.

North is about 1 o'clock. The city was almost exactly 1km (roughly 0.6 miles) from North to South. The area inside the walls was rather more than 50 hectares (120 acres), but later cliff falls into the river make the original size uncertain.
