Meet Peter outside the canteen at 7:45, or ask at the front office if you come later. Any amount of time you can help is welcome.
Always wear enclosed shoes. Kids will need to follow-along/help out as no supervision is provided.
Why is this important?
The DoE have reduced all public school GA hours to 3 days a week, but the task list is the same. The GA plays a vital role in keeping the school functional and safe so all can focus on learning and play. A little of your time and effort will go a long way to reduce the load the school has to juggle in these reduced hours, and directly support your kids.
If you’re agitated by this, you could write some stern letters to the DoE or your local member (perhaps including some demands about making our school more accessible).
In the meantime - Community Unite and lend a hand!
Started in 2021, this team build a wonderful and sustained composting system in our community. As they have all retired or moved on, we need fresh people ready to carry on the good work.
The DDS did such a good job establishing it in the community that the school staff, canteen and students are well and truly in the system now, but they still need parent support to keep it churning.
Food waste in landfill creates methane which can cause 20 times more atmospheric damage than carbon dioxide, and harmful leachates which can impact ground water. And over 40% of landfill is food waste.
Meanwhile, composted food waste improves the soil, nourishes plants and helps to grow healthy food, locally. Too good!
But not everyone has the know-how or space to compost at home. Enter, Dirt Stirrers.
We will collect your food scraps weekly at the school gate and do the composting for you.
How it used to work:
Drop us a line at dullygrounds@gmail.com. We will supply you with a collection bucket and some simple information about what can, and cannot, be collected for compost.
Bring your bucket full of food scraps to the Blackwood Avenue gate closest to the corner of Kintore Street, every Friday of school term, between 8.45am and 9.15am. We will empty your scraps into the compost bins and return your bucket for next week’s scraps.
Your scraps will be turned into beautiful compost and we will keep the school community up to date with how much food waste we have all diverted from landfill so we can revel in our positive impact.
Watch the school garden flourish, pick up a bundle of produce at a pop-up harvest sale, and feel good knowing you are part of positive change.
By composting collectively, we can have a major positive environmental impact; we can support our school garden to flourish; and we can teach our kids to value ‘waste’ as a valuable resource.
What is happening currently?
Some parents and Ms Bourke's Gardening Club are doing some turning but we need MORE COMPOST! Making a reliable time for families to bring it in is how we can keep having great impact on our environment and the kid's education in this space.
