Class overview
This course is designed to introduce many aspects of graduate study for incoming students. The topics include computer science research in general, tools and methodologies, publishing and review process, ethics and policy issues, how to be a successful researcher and many others.

Format: Mostly lectures (with discussions) and guest lectures.
Policies
This course is required for all entering graduate students in computer science.
Although we will have some presentations and guest speakers, this offering of CPS 701 is discussion-based. We will read some material on issues of general interest to computer scientists, and discuss them.
Grades are based on class participation. The workload will be light, and there will be no exams. You might be asked to perform some minor tasks, such as giving a short presentation in class, write a paragraph about a research topic, write an individual development plan or design a webpage for yourself.
