ArcGIS Pro (2.6+) files for the paper "From Bulwarks and Bombs to Boulevards".
To ensure comparability between the pre-WWII Meßtischblatt (plane table) and modern street/boulevard grid, I have digitized both by hand here.
Apart from the Meßtischblätter itself projected onto the map, the files also contain the depiction of the last city walls/bulwarks from various sources in order to create our measure "boulevardized walls" in the paper.
The boulevard measure was classified through the ESRI World Street Map 'highways', from 2021.
The sample was split into two files to reduce loading times.
The frequency of different geographic characteristics suggested by its place name is Zipf distributed
Data file for the paper "What's in a Name? Initial Geography and Urban Development".
Data source mostly from the "Deutsches Ortsnamenbuch" (Niemeyer, 2012). In the file below, I have categorized the current interpretation of the very first, original place name/toponym into 168 'main geographic characteristics'. The file also provides my English translation of the interpreted toponyms; along with settlement city rights year awarded/first recorded mention of the settlement as good proxy for its foundation date and the 'Sprachbund' (linguistic area e.g. German/Slavic/Celtic/Roman etc.) of the interpreted toponym.
Below is the 'cleaned' file with 3738 entries as it has been used in the paper. The 'raw' file with 4300+ entries, that importantly contains changes in the meaning of a settlement's toponym over time (e.g. through migration from a different Sprachbund), is available upon request.
Also: Visualized toponym dataset 100AD to 2019AD: year of first mentioned record and year of city rights received. (blue=first mentioned record of the place, red=city rights received. In the top right is the time scale.)
