The first step is attending one of our orientation sessions to ensure that the Kumon Method is the right fit for your child’s needs. On that day, your child can take a free placement test for math and/or reading. During that time, we will cover the Kumon program with the parents and provide information on what to expect as a Kumon student.
To sign up for an orientation, click HERE . Once you complete the new student orientation you can then schedule a new enrollment conference to submit the paperwork from the orientation and for your child to start his/her first class.
Parent conferences can be made anytime during the student’s enrollment for any concerns or questions you might have with the progress, work being given, or adding a subject. We do recommend a parent conference after one month of enrollment to check in with your child’s progress and every 3 to 4 months thereafter for current students. You can sign up for a conference HERE .
We create lesson plans for each level and an overall goal to achieve for each student. Most times there will be more than one time through a level and repetitions of packets spread throughout lesson plans so the students learn the material and retain it better. Repetitions help the students learn and get comfortable with what they are working on before the move onto possibly harder material within the level.
Corrections are a part of the learning process just as much as the new packets that are given. They encourage the students to work through finding the correct answers and learn the material better.
We encourage parents to home grade and correct the homework to 100%. The material in the homework will be fresh in their minds and when corrected that day will help them learn better. We also welcome parents to schedule a conference to review their child’s progress or talk to one of our staff about the adjusting the workload for your child. If interested in home grading talk to one of our staff members at the Front Desk.
Home grading is highly encouraged. It helps reduce the amount of corrections they have to complete and allows them to work on new material during class. Home grading helps your child learn more effectively; they are able to see the mistakes they’ve made while the work is still fresh in their minds. The homework should be corrected to 100%. If you’re interested in home grading, talk to one of our staff members on how to get started. You can check out an answer book by asking the Front Desk staff. If you have any questions feel free to talk to us in person, call us, or email us at anytime.
We have both the options of vacation with homework and vacation without homework. We ask for a 2-week notice so that we may have enough time to prepare for your child’s leave. To access the vacation form click (here). If you rather speak to us in person, feel free to come in and pick up a vacation form at Front Desk.
Please note: Students who are absent for more than one month in a calendar year will be considered un-enrolled. This means that a $50 registration fee will be assessed if a student exceeds 1 month vacation-no homework. It is possible to have one month vacation no-homework paired with vacation with homework to avoid extra fees.
Here are multiple aspects that we evaluate following the student’s test. Accuracy AND the time taken are both taken into consideration when evaluating how the student has performed on the test. In addition to these, we evaluate their level of understanding of the material and their readiness to move on to new, more advanced concepts. For example, what is the pace from one problem to the next and what is the level of focus overall during the test.
If your child has taken a test, you will find a sheet in his/her Kumon bag that contains the test score, time taken, and additional comments on his/her performance.
If your child has not completed all of his/her homework, we ask that you still send any incomplete work back to us. We can assign the work again for either classwork or homework as needed. It is better that they finish the earlier packets (lower page number of the level) rather than start the next ones further along the level. If the packets are not returned within 1-2 weeks, we will re-assign the work and provide another copy of the packets that were not submitted.
As the levels progress, the completion time for each page becomes longer. We can modify your child’s page amount per day. If you have any questions regarding your child’s homework completion, feel free to discuss your questions/concerns with the front desk.
