We tried to come up with different problems statements this week and we had our first meeting with our mentor. We chose our problem statement as, “Elderly care for people with mental illness.”
These two weeks, we designed a survey to further understand what all problems can be faced by the elderly people suffering from mental illness. The survey results showed that majority of the people suffering from mental illnesses felt lonely and thought they didn’t have a purpose of life. The survey also helped us in knowing about problems and issues which we hadn't taken into consideration. After the survey, we wrote down all the problems.
This week, we discussed further about the problems the elderly people faced and started making a note of them. We also segregated problems from our survey data. To comprehend all this data easily, we made a chart with all the problems.
With our problem chart ready, all we had to do now was to come up with solutions to tackle these problems. We used the 5-5-3 technique to brainstorm for solutions. After getting around 35 solutions, we started making pros and cons of each solution.
Together, we came up with several solutions, but unfortunately after discussions, we found that most of our solutions were not feasible in some or the other way. We continued to scrutinize our ideas thoroughly. After a long discussion, we put few selected one on a chart!!
We also gave a name to our VideoBot ... Emily !!
From the pros and cons list, we chose the 6 best solutions. Later on, we realized that most of these can be merged into a single solution – a virtual companion who can take care of them, remind them, be their friend, etc. So, we decided to make a virtual companion as our final solution.
We sent a survey with our solution link (Personal virtual companion - Emily) for users to test it. We wanted to get users feedback about how our solution works and what all can be done to improve it. We expected a lot opinions for improvements. Majority of the users requested if games and activities, and memory quizzes could be also integrated into the virtual companion. So, we plan to add the above features into our virtual companion later.
