Learning how to train your dog through an online or hybrid class is new to many people. Some tips for success are provided below.
Before your first live online session, please review these pointers and make sure you're ready for our class:
have an open space to work
minimize distractions
check your technology: strong internet connection; fully charged devices; working camera, microphone, and speakers
previous Zoom use or pre-class testing with instructor
camera boundaries marked
sufficient lighting in front of you
camera set to landscape
A few days before class
Find a quiet area of your home with enough open space to comfortably practice the exercises. If you want family members to attend, remind them that they must not interrupt or distract you or your dog.
Set up your camera in landscape view.
Mark the area visible through your camera lens. A family member, if available, can be helpful. Any item can be used to identify boundaries: painters tape, mats, area rugs, sheets.
Check lighting at the time of day your class will meet to ensure you and your dog are visible on screen.
Check your background. Fewer distractions are better.
Check that your camera, sound, and microphone are working with Zoom. Contact your instructor at least 48 hours before your class if you would like to schedule a test session or you can join a Zoom test meeting.
The day of class
Gather your supplies: four- or six-foot leash; treats; treat bag, pockets, or painters apron; water for you and your dog; toy or chew and bed or mat for your dog or a quiet helper.
Go to your training space.
Set up your device and check your connections, camera, microphone, and speakers.
Get your dog.
Take a deep breath.
