This page serves as a repository of social justice projects to encourage students, particularly undergraduate students, regardless of STEM or non-STEM background, to start addressing social inequities using a data-driven approach.
Students can either use CODAP for a quick and easy dive into the data or use the R programming language for a deep and thorough dive into the data. CODAP and R (and RStudio - an integrated development environment (IDE) for R) are free to use.
CODAP (Common Data Analysis Platform) was created and developed by The Concord Consortium. It is an open-source software that is used for dynamic data exploration. Beginning students with no prior programming exposure are strongly encouraged to use CODAP. See Tutorials & Resources for help on using CODAP.
Students who would like to explore the data using R are encouraged to download and install RStudio (Desktop). To help students get started on their R journey, a sample project with R code is provided. The students are encouraged to copy the R code and modify it to suit their data set of choice. See Tutorials & Resources for sample R Code and help on using R.
Instructors are invited to use these modules as projects in their courses and to provide constructive feedback to the PIs (ruma@nccu.edu) to improve the projects. Additionally, sample skeleton PBL modules are provided for a few of the datasets.
Click on the project below to access the curated datasets for that project.
