This scholarship was established in loving memory of Roshan Rahbari, a former student of West Valley Community College and a graduate of Leland High School in San Jose, California. In his 18 years of life Roshan touched the lives of many. He believed in harmony among people of different backgrounds and had a rainbow of friends. He was sensitive to the plight of people in need of help and saw everyone as an individual worthy of respect. His dream was to become a psychologist for young people, and it is in his kind spirit that his parents established this scholarship fund to help young people realize their dreams.
The Roshan Rahbari Scholarship Fund seeks to support outstanding community college students with financial need to transfer to and complete their bachelor's degrees at four-year colleges and universities.

At the beginning of the 20th century, 500,000 rhinos roamed Africa and Asia. Today, only 27,000 rhinos remain in the wild -- a result of increased trade in rhino horn and poaching. At Reputation Rhino, we believe that we are custodians and caretakers of the planet, and have a strong responsibility to protect endangered species from extinction. This scholarship will support students with a demonstrated interest and career plan in the conservation of endangered species.
ESSAY TOPIC
Plants and animals are disappearing at an alarming rate, and the natural ecological systems that all species, including humans, depend upon are at serious risk. Why is this a global concern?
What successful strategies and tactics have been used to protect endangered species? What practical steps can we, as individuals, communities, and countries, take in the immediate future to protect vulnerable species and their habitats?

Talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not.
Although African-Americans comprise 13.4% of the US population, just 1% of start-ups receiving venture funding have Black founders. And since women own just 11% of the equity value of start-ups, this issue is even greater for Black female entrepreneurs.
From small businesses to venture-scale, entrepreneurship is an enduring and impactful way that communities move forward, but the funded entrepreneurs in the US do not reflect the diversity of our country. Solving this problem will take deep dedication throughout the start-up and venture capital world.
As one small part of this, the African-American Entrepreneurs Grant - Female Award will be awarded to a female African-American entrepreneur at any education level who is currently building or who aspires to build a new business. Current or aspiring African-American entrepreneurs across any field or business stage will be considered.
Winners will be selected on the merit of their business idea, and on the impact that additional financial support will have for them.

Talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not.
Black women are paid 39% less than white men. While this ratio is slowly improving, it won’t reach parity at its current pace for another 100 years. Black women ask for raises at the same rates as white women, but they get worse results. The pay gap actually widens at higher-age education levels, beginning at age 16 and growing from there.
This problem reflects the systemic inequality that is prevalent in so many fields in America. It’s an issue that will require reform across many fields in the public and private sectors. As one small part of this, the Opportunity for Black Women Scholarship will be awarded to a Black woman at any education level and field of study. This scholarship is part of the Mechanism Ventures Impact Grants Series.
