Here is a list of commonly asked questions related to Minecraft maps:
If you are playing on a mobile device or console, you have Bedrock Edition, also commonly referred to as Pocket Edition or MCPE.
If you are playing on a PC, and there is a launcher with multiple versions of the game, as well as Singleplayer and Multiplayer buttons on the main menu, you have Java Edition.
If you are playing on a PC, and you see a button labeled Marketplace on the main menu, you have Bedrock Edition.
Installing a Minecraft map is very easy!
On Bedrock Edition, all you have to do is download the .mcworld file, and either press open or double click on the file. This will automatically launch Minecraft and import the world, where it will show up in the Worlds tab.
On Java Edition, the world will download as a .zip file. Using a file manager and right clicking on the file, press Extract All. Then, copy the world folder into your saves folder, located at C://users/USERNAME/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/saves. When you open Minecraft, it should appear with the rest of your world saves.
First, check to make sure that you have followed the above instructions.
For Bedrock Edition, if you receive a "Level Import Failed" error, you can rename the .mcworld file that you downloaded to instead end with .zip. Then, using a file manager and right clicking on the file, press Extract All. Navigate to the point where you can see a level.dat file. Select all of the files visible, right click and press Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder. Then, rename the resulting .zip file to .mcworld. You can either press open or double click on the file. If the file still does not import into Minecraft, it is likely that it is corrupted.
First, come up with an interesting idea, something that you and others would want to play through. It can include anything you can think of, like aliens, castles, or even dinosaurs! Consider the following questions:
What will the player see and do?
Is there an overall story or backstory?
What kind of structures will exist?
Will your map be Singleplayer or Multiplayer?
With this in mind, you can start working on your map! I would recommend Creative Mode for this, especially if you have big ideas. Make sure to include lots of details, ranging from decorations to furniture to chests with items inside. For an extra challenge, why not scatter books that have pieces of a story, or music disks for the player to find around your map?
There are many tools to help you build. Some tools I use include World Painter, which helps you make custom terrain like mountains much more easily, WorldEdit, a tool that helps you build large structures, MCCToolChest, a tool for converting worlds between the Java and Bedrock Editions of the game, and World Fabricator, a tool for terraforming in Bedrock Edition.
To further enhance your map, you can even create a custom texture pack (I like using Paint 3D and GIMP to do this) or make new entities (mobs and animals) with Blockbench.
