In this practical you are required to determine whether a drug has the potential to protect cells from being killed by a virus. You will need to use statistical analysis to determine whether the drug is effective (or potentially harmful) to the cells.
A cell culture of human cells is exposed to a virus that will kill the cells. The culture is split into two samples. One sample receives a drug that potentially protects the cells from being affected by the virus ("with drug") while the control sample has been incubated without the drug ("control"). After a sufficient incubation period the cells are stained with Trypan-Blue. Dead cells will appear dark blue, whereas live cells will exclude the dye and hence will remain white.
From the cell counts you are required to decide whether the drug can protect the cells from the effect of the virus.
