Dr. Todd Young
Medical Director/ CEO - Health Care
Dr. Todd Kevin Young is a 54-year-old physician born and raised in Springdale, Newfoundland. Although his hometown has a population of only about 3,000 people, he has built a career that reaches far beyond its borders. Over several decades, he has served as a family doctor, emergency physician, educator, and healthcare leader. Today, he continues to guide the Main Street Medical Clinic as its Medical Director while also serving as the CEO of MEDICURO Virtual Health Inc., two organizations he founded and continues to advance.
Early Steps Toward a Life in Health Care
Growing up in Springdale, Dr. Todd Young developed a passion for helping others, which led him to pursue a career in nursing. After high school, he enrolled at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital School of Nursing, where he completed his Diploma in Nursing in 2001. During his early career, he worked in several clinical settings, including remote Indigenous communities in northern Ontario. His time as an outpost nurse strengthened his commitment to underserved populations and motivated him to pursue further education. He later completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Lakehead University and became a Nurse Practitioner in 2000.
Transition to Medicine and Continuous Learning
Dr. Young’s interest in providing broader medical care eventually led him to pursue his medical degree at McMaster University, which he completed in 2004. He then finished a residency in rural family medicine at McMaster in 2006, focusing on the unique needs of remote communities. Over the years, he continued expanding his professional knowledge. He earned an Executive MBA with a specialization in Occupational Health and Safety and is currently completing a Diploma in Dermatology at Cardiff University, demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning.
Leadership in Rural Medical Practice
Throughout his early medical career, Dr. Young worked as a family and emergency physician in both Ontario and Newfoundland. In Springdale, he became the physician lead at the Green Bay Health Center, a role that required overseeing clinical services and ensuring patients received dependable care. This position mirrored the responsibilities of a Chief of Staff in a larger hospital, but needed additional resource management skills due to the rural environment. He also served as Medical Director for Valley Vista Seniors Home, where he worked closely with elderly residents to improve their quality of life. His responsibilities expanded further when he accepted the role of Medical Examiner, contributing to public safety by investigating and certifying causes of death.
Creating Modern Health Solutions for Rural Communities
Dr. Young has always aimed to strengthen health care for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2016, he founded the Main Street Medical Clinic in Springdale, introducing a model that blended in-person care with virtual services. This approach helped patients in remote regions access timely medical support without facing significant travel barriers. Around the same time, he launched Medicuro Virtual Health Inc., a platform that connected patients with physicians through secure online consultations. Medicuro demonstrated how technology could close care gaps for rural and underserved communities by providing convenient access to medical advice, prescriptions, and health information.
Breakthroughs in Addiction Support and Workplace Health
One of Dr. Young’s most significant accomplishments is the creation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s first rapid access addictions program. This innovative service offers immediate support for individuals struggling with drug or alcohol dependence. With satellite offices in Pasadena, Stephenville, Grand Falls-Windsor, Gander, Marystown, Clarenville, Bay Roberts, and St. John’s, the program ensures that care is accessible across the province. It has become a vital resource for families affected by addiction. Dr. Young also developed a distributed occupational health and safety model that delivers workplace health services across Newfoundland and Labrador, helping employers protect workers and promote wellness.
Commitment to Education and Professional Growth
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Young has contributed extensively to medical education. He has taught at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, guiding students in family medicine, emergency care, and rural practice. He has also contributed to curriculum development and served as a reviewer for medical education materials, helping improve training programs for future physicians.
Recognition for Service and Excellence
Dr. Todd Young’s dedication has earned him numerous honors. He was nominated for a Human Rights Award in 2020 for his contributions to addiction and mental health programming. He received a Fellowship in Rural and Remote Health from the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada, recognizing his work in underserved areas. He was awarded the Central Health Safety Award in 2012 for advancing workplace safety, and he holds a Fellowship in Family Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada, one of the field’s highest distinctions.
Dedication to Community and Personal Life
Dr. Young’s commitment to community extends beyond medicine. He sponsors youth hockey teams by providing jerseys and equipment, and he contributes annually to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also supports The Gathering Place, a homeless shelter in Newfoundland. Despite his demanding work, he continues to reside in Springdale, remains closely connected to the place where his journey began, and continues to advocate for better health care for its residents.
