Susheel Mittal did MSc (Hons School) and PhD in chemistry from Department of Chemistry, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, India in 1986 and served there for 3 years.
Presently, he is serving as Vice-Chancellor of IK Gujral Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar since June 17, 2023 with additional charge of two more universities: Sardar Beant Singh State University, Gurdaspur and Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Ferozepur. Earlier, he joined Thapar University in 1989 as a lecturer, promoted to Senior Professor in 2010 and continued till 2021. He pursued research in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry. He has more than 32 years of teaching experience and working in the areas of Chemical Sensing using voltammetry, potentiometry and spectrophotometry for heavy metal ions and pesticides, besides working on Ambient Air Quality with reference to Crop Residue Burning and its impact on human health. Nanoparticle modification of the working electrodes including Screen Printed Electrodes is one of the focus areas of research. Inorganic ion-exchange materials and their nano-composites have been used for various applications. Development of whole cell based biosensors and ion sensitive field effect transistors as chemical sensors is another field of interest. He has published more than 125 research papers in international and national refereed journals.
He has also worked extensively on monitoring and prediction of particulate pollution in the ambient air during crop residue burning. He is the Incharge of the state-of-the-art Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station established at TIET under collaboration with Indian Institute of Tropical Metrology (IITM, Pune) funded under MAPAN-8 project of Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi. The station is continuously collecting online data of Ambient air quality parameters: O3, CO, CO2, NO, NO2, NOX, CH4, Total Non-Methane hydrocarbons, Black Carbon, PM2.5 and PM10, besides the metrology parameters of ambient environment. Epidemiology of respiratory parameters was done for a period of 3 years on school children to study the effect of PM pollution during post-harvest Crop Residue Burning activities.
He has served as Deputy Director, Dean (Research & Sponsored projects), Head of School of Chemistry at TIET and presently working as Senior Professor, School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. 25 students have completed Ph D under his guidance and 2 more are doing at present. Dr Mittal has also guided an M Phil student, 10 M.E/ M Tech students in the area of Environmental Engineering and 25 MSc (Chemistry) students. Dr Mittal has completed 12 sponsored research projects from DST, UGC and AICTE, BRNS, DRDO(NRB) and Royal Academy of Engg, UK (worth £10,000). He has visited USA, Belgium, France and Japan, UK, Colombia and Hungary for exchange of research work.
