Dr Soon Kong Choon obtained his medical degree from National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2005. He received his training in general surgery in Sarawak General Hospital and Penang General Hospital. Thereafter, he obtained his Master of Surgery (UKM) in 2013 and Membership of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd) in 2015. He served as a General Surgeon and Head of Department of General Surgery in Miri Hospital in 2014.
Dr Soon pursued his subspecialist training as a hepatobiliary surgeon in 2016. He has the experience of working in different Hepatobiliary Centres during the period of training. These centres included Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Selayang Hospital, Sarawak General Hospital and King’s College Hospital in London, thus, gaining vast experience in managing complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases as well as liver transplantation. He successfully completed his Fellowship Training in Hepatobiliary Surgery and was board-certified as a Hepatobiliary Surgeon in 2019. Thereafter, he continues his service in Sarawak and serves as a Consultant General Surgeon and Hepatobiliary Surgeon in Sarawak General Hospital. Dr. Soon has strived to deliver vital hepatobiliary services to this large population during these years of service. He provides monthly visiting to the district hospital in Sarawak, which include Miri Hospital and Sibu Hospital, and occasionally to Bintulu Hospital whenever need arises.
He has a special interest in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases and constantly upgrades himself in the field of laparoscopic surgery. He believes that minimally invasive procedure, especially laparoscopic liver and pancreatic surgery, is the way forward in the field of Hepatobiliary Surgery. It offers vast advantages for patients in terms of postoperative recovery and hence, is gaining increasing popularity nowadays. He is also a skilled advanced endoscopist with an interest in therapeutic ERCPs.
