This module aims to provide students with knowledge on the broad range of technologies, systems and processes for the digital transformation of the electricity grid covering generation, transmission, distribution and utilisation. Topics covered will provide a cross-disciplinary overview approach on the integrative strategies of information and communication technology (ICT) with power and energy systems necessary for the digitalization of the electricity grid. Students will also learn on the cyber security risk, requirements, and security architecture for smart grids.Â
This module aims to introduce the smart grid concept and its characteristics to the students through the existing and future requirements of the power distribution and transmission networks. The students will learn on the various technologies like demand & supply matching, load profiling, and demand response that optimize smart grids to be cost effective, efficient, and reliable. The module will provide students with an understanding of the information technology and communication systems that enable the expanding applications of smart grids. Students will be able to evaluate the impact of smart grid technologies in improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint. This module will also allow students to understand the fundamentals of electricity market theory and practice, with a particular focus on the National Electricity Market of Singapore (NEMS) and its unique features.
This module aims to provide students with knowledge on the design of electrical systems for residential, commercial and industrial installations according to statutory requirements. It covers the topics on electric power distribution systems and electrical installation design including estimation of load requirements and selection of protection devices and cables. The module also cover the fundamentals of earthing systems and lightning protection for built environment based on relevant codes of practice.
