Professor Shams Pathan is a distinguished finance scholar with over 20 years of international academic leadership across the UK, Australia, and Asia. Appointed as Full Professor of Finance at the German International University in Cairo (January 2026), his career embodies a powerful fusion of research excellence, pedagogical innovation, and ethical leadership in areas critical to the future of global finance: responsible banking, climate-related financial risk, corporate governance, digital transformation, and sustainable development.
A recipient of the prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)—one of the highest honours for early-career researchers in business and economics—Professor Pathan has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals including the Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Banking & Finance, Journal of Financial Services Research, Journal of Business, Finance & Accounting, and The British Accounting Review. His work has garnered more than 4,000 citations (h-index 19) and attracted over £215,000 in competitive research funding, reflecting sustained influence in both academic and policy circles.
His research advances urgent debates on how financial institutions can balance profitability with planetary and social responsibility—examining topics such as executive incentives, ESG integration, FinTech disruption, and systemic resilience in emerging markets. He actively contributes to scholarly discourse as an editor and reviewer for top-tier international journals and collaborates with researchers across Europe, North America, and Asia.
Beyond research, Professor Pathan is a committed educator and curriculum leader. As Director of the Master of Finance (Advanced) at Curtin University, he spearheaded a transformative redesign that embedded CFA-aligned content, ESG principles, and ethical decision-making frameworks, boosting enrolment by 25%. At the University of Queensland, he served as Leader of the Master of Commerce program, strengthening industry engagement and student employability through experiential learning and global partnerships.
A Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA), he has taught and mentored students at all levels—from undergraduate to PhD—and supervised numerous research projects that have led to high distinctions, publications, and placements at institutions such as Citibank, NAB, Central Banks, and academia. He also mentors early-career academics, fostering inclusive, research-led teaching environments.
Educated globally, Professor Pathan holds a PhD in Finance from Monash University (Australia), an MSc in Finance from the University of Strathclyde (UK), and both a Master of Commerce (Finance) and Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Banking and Finance from the University of Dhaka (Bangladesh).
Guided by the principles of Curiosity, Conscience, and Commitment, he believes finance must be more than technically proficient—it must be ethically grounded and socially purposeful. In his words: “Finance, when pursued with intellectual rigour and moral clarity, can be a catalyst for equitable, resilient, and sustainable growth.”
