Dr. Salvatore Palumbo, FACS, FAANS, is a board-certified neurosurgeon and spine specialist based on Long Island who serves as Chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at Good Samaritan University Hospital (GSUH) in West Islip. He also serves as Director of Neurotrauma at GSUH and will celebrate 25 years of service at this award-winning teaching hospital in 2027. In addition, he serves as Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bethpage.
A significant portion of Dr. Palumbo's career has been devoted to treating patients with complex neurological and spinal conditions, and he has earned recognition for his clinical expertise both throughout Long Island and across the country.
Salvatore Palumbo, MD, is recognized for a patient-first philosophy that combines advanced surgical techniques and individualized care plans to achieve optimal outcomes. He takes time with each patient to conduct a thorough evaluation, identifying the most effective and least invasive treatment approach for their specific condition. His focus extends beyond managing pain to encompass the restoration of function, mobility, and overall quality of life.
Palumbo has helped thousands of patients on Long Island manage and overcome conditions that affect the spine, neck, brain, and peripheral nerves. He performs a wide range of intracranial and complex spinal surgeries and brings deep expertise in spinal reconstruction for both degenerative and traumatic spinal disorders.
In addition to his spinal work, he is highly experienced in treating intracranial tumors and other forms of neuropathology. His surgical range spans from minimally invasive microdiscectomies to multi-level instrumental spinal restabilization procedures.
Among the conditions that Dr. Salvatore diagnoses and treats are back and leg pain, arm and neck pain, sciatica, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, compression fractures, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal and brain tumors, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Dr. Salvatore Palumbo has received numerous professional honors throughout his career, including recognition as a Top Doctor in America and on Long Island. While practicing in Pennsylvania, he also received the Outstanding Physicians Award, along with other professional recognitions that reflect his commitment to his field.
For Salvatore, however, his patients' experiences and recoveries carry more meaning than any formal recognition. One patient earlier this year called him a "hero." Another shared these words regarding the care his father received: "Dr. Palumbo took care of my father when he was in a bike accident. My dad is a surgeon, and Dr. Palumbo was his first and only call. He's the best!!! I would recommend him to anyone who is suffering from any type of pain!"
One patient who had endured chronic pain for many years described his experience this way: "Where do I start? I've been dealing with multiple herniated discs in my neck for over 20 years with consistent pain. I've been living off of epidural injections and nerve blocks for most of those years. After 2 unsuccessful back fusions, I swore I would never get my neck fused. It got to a point after 3 epidural shots in the past year with unlivable pain and compressed nerves that I got it done. Thank god I didn't use my orthopedic surgeon and was recommended to Dr. Palumbo! I'm 2 months out of surgery and pain-free in my neck! Every visit was never a rush; he took the time to speak with you about any concerns and had a great bedside manner before and after surgery."
Dr. Palumbo was one of the founding members of Long Island Brain and Spine and the Interventional Pain Management Group. Long Island Brain and Spine is a multidisciplinary center that brings board-certified neurosurgeons and interventional pain management physicians together to deliver coordinated spine and brain care. Services at the center cover a wide spectrum, from neck and lower back pain to brain and pituitary tumors, aneurysms, and stroke management.
This collaborative model enables smooth coordination of care across specialties, providing patients with a more integrated experience and access to a broader range of treatment options within a single unified practice.
An Active Member in the Neurosurgical Community
Palumbo holds the distinction of Fellow of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, a credential that speaks to his education, training, ethical standards, and professional competence in surgery. He has also been appointed a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and his memberships include the North American Spine Society and the New York State and County Medical Societies.
Salvatore Palumbo, MD, completed his undergraduate studies at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his General Surgery Internship and Neurosurgery Residency at the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Salvatore Palumbo's dedication to serving others is reflected not only in his clinical work but also in his broader community involvement. He has donated to Catholic Health Long Island. This organization serves hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders each year by providing care from the beginning to the end of life, helping individuals live their final years with comfort, grace, and dignity. He also regularly donates to Make-A-Wish, an organization that grants life-changing wishes to children living with critical illnesses.
