See the instructions below for your summer assignment. You can take notes by hand or on your computer. We will take an exam on the summer material within the first full week of school.
Unit 0 - This unit encompasses much of the critical understanding of the atom and will provide a necessary base of knowledge for the year. It is critical that you work efficiently through this material. The total time of the videos is approximately 4 hours. I expect it to take approximately 10-15 hours to complete the associated work and prepare for the exam. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. The material is mostly linked to Chapters 1, 2, 7, and 8 in your textbook. You can access a digital version of the textbook via this link.
1) Once you know which teacher you have (Dr. Rycroft or Dr. Merrick), we need one or both of your parents/guardians to email your teacher by September 2nd from the email address that they want your teacher to use to communicate with them. Please have them introduce themselves briefly and make sure they tell us whose parent/guardian they are.
2) You need to watch the following videos, take notes, and complete the associated practice problems. There will be a test in the first week of school on each of these concepts to ensure that you completed the summer assignments. Also, you will be showing me all notes and the packet. To prepare for the test, take a look at the objectives sheet which provides a list of learning objectives.
3) Download and print the Memorization Sheet - Although you will not succeed in AP Chemistry through pure memorization, there are some things that MUST be memorized. By the end of the year, you will need to know everything on this sheet, however, for the first exam, you simply need to memorize the polyatomic ions (formula, name, and charge).
4) Complete the pre-AP Chemistry Math Review packet (pdf version) - this covers the math skills you must have in order to succeed in the class. Complete the packet and bring it with you on the first day of class. (Answers)
