2026-27 Pacing Guide for Science

To master standard 4.P.1.1 on magnets, you need to know key vocabulary words that explain how magnets push or pull iron and other magnets from a distance without touching them.

Main Magnet Words

• Magnet: An object that pulls iron and steel things toward it.

• Magnetic Field: The invisible space around a magnet where its force works.

• Force: A push or a pull.

• Magnetic Force: The push or pull between magnets or between a magnet and iron.

How Magnets Act

• Attract: To pull closer together. Opposite poles attract each other.

• Repel: To push apart. The same poles push away from each other.

• Interact: How things act upon or affect each other.

• Motion: A change in position or movement caused by a force.

Magnet Parts and Materials

• Pole: The ends of a magnet where the pull is the strongest.

• North Pole: The north-seeking end of a magnet.

• South Pole: The south-seeking end of a magnet.

• Iron: A hard metal that magnets attract.
