Dr Oscar John Ma

About

Dr. Oscar John Ma was a pioneer in developing ultrasound practices for trauma, and he began documenting progress as early as 1992. He is the co-editor of a well-known McGraw-Hill textbook on Emergency Ultrasound, which is still in use and is updated regularly. He edits medical publications as a result of his medical publication credits.


Philanthropy and Charitable Contribution

Dr. John Ma volunteered with the American Board of Emergency Medicine from 2002 to 2019. He also contributes to The Little Sisters of the Poor annually.

He was instrumental in establishing two $1 million endowed professorships at OHSU in honor of former department chairs Dr. Jerris Hedges and Dr. John Moorhead.


Achievements and Accomplishments

John Ma's interest in medicine did not fade with him, and he is still actively updating many of the publications he contributed to. The fourth edition of Ma and Mateer's Emergency Ultrasound, published in 2020, included significant updates on using ultrasound to detect COVID-19.

Oscar, Doctor John Ma's commitment to patient safety and high-quality clinical care helped him earn the position of chair on the OHSU Professional Board, where he also served as president of the executive medical committee.

In the 12 years between 2007 and 2019, Oregon expanded emergency care from one staffed emergency department to five. During this time, the budget increased from $10 million to $28 million, allowing for more significant investment in technology and patient care improvements.

Ma also funded emergency medicine residency programs for other physicians and launched novel entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors.


Awards

Dr. Oscar John Ma has been named a top doctor by Portland Monthly Magazine numerous times. He was awarded the OHSU Golden Rose in 2009 for his work in the emergency department and the Pillar of Excellence award for people development that same year.

He was frequently recognized as an outstanding physician at Truman Medical Center and received multiple awards for emergency medicine teacher of the year.


Personal Hobbies and Interests

Dr. John Ma has a variety of stimulating hobbies and interests. He enjoys the golf course challenges and new New York City dining experiences. In his spare time, he enjoys visiting museums in and around New York City and international travel.

He also previously worked as a sportswriter and has professional-level knowledge of golf courses.
