If you want immersive, open-back realism in a closed-back shell for critical music production with a premium aesthetic, choose DROP + MrSpeakers Ether; if you need the most advanced acoustic tuning for long sessions and a self-adjusting fit to eliminate fatigue, choose Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed.
• DROP + MrSpeakers Ether: Delivers an incredibly open soundstage and ultra-low distortion via V-Planar drivers but requires careful cable management with its 4-pin XLR connection.
• Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed: Features revolutionary AMTS technology to banish standing waves and a Gorilla Glass build that is lighter on pressure points, though it lacks the distinct "Italian supercar" visual flair of the Ether.
• Who each pick is for: The Ether suits purists who prioritize sonic transparency and a unique carbon fiber look, while the Noire X is the ideal choice for producers needing extended comfort and scientifically refined clarity.
The DROP + MrSpeakers Ether CX is designed for the listener who refuses to compromise between isolation and openness. It stands out as a flagship collaboration that brings the airy, realistic presentation typically found in open-back headphones into a sealed enclosure. This makes it a compelling option for music production environments where you need to hear every nuance of a mix without leaking sound into the room or letting outside noise interfere. The design philosophy here is rooted in allowing the music to slide into your experience rather than inserting itself, creating a relaxed listening atmosphere that feels natural and unforced.
Visually, this headphone is striking. The large, high-gloss carbon fiber cups give it the sleek lines of an Italian supercar, making it a statement piece in any studio setup. Beyond the looks, the engineering focuses heavily on the driver performance. The patented V-Planar technology addresses the physical limitations of traditional planar diaphragms by allowing them to "accordion" during bass excursions. This results in measurably lower distortion—less than 0.5 percent in the low bass and less than 0.1 percent from 60 Hz to 9 kHz—which is crucial when tracking instruments or mixing complex arrangements where precision matters.

However, this product isn't for everyone. If you prefer a plug-and-play experience with standard 3.5mm connections right out of the box, you might find the 4-pin XLR requirement a bit cumbersome, even though adapters are included. Furthermore, while the NiTinol memory metal headband is durable, the overall weight and the specific ear pad materials (Japanese protein leather) might feel different compared to synthetic alternatives. You should buy this if you value a clean, open tonal balance and a stunning build quality over a lightweight, purely utilitarian design. Skip it if you need wireless connectivity or if you are looking for a budget-friendly entry point, as this is a premium tool built for high-end audio fidelity.
The Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed is engineered for the user who demands the absolute highest level of acoustic refinement and comfort for marathon listening sessions. It represents a significant evolution from its predecessor, the AEON 2 NOIRE, by integrating DCA's state-of-the-art Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS). This technology is not just a gimmick; it uses advanced metamaterial design concepts to shape the frequency response while simultaneously eliminating high-frequency standing waves. These standing waves are often responsible for the harsh, synthetic-sounding highs that can cause listener fatigue during long hours of work. By removing them, the Noire X delivers a smooth, clear, and airy treble that remains detailed without becoming fatiguing.
Comfort is another area where the Noire X shines, specifically for those who wear headphones for eight hours or more. The self-tensioning headband distributes pressure evenly across the top of your head, effectively eliminating hot spots and pressure points. This uniform pressure distribution ensures a balanced, barely-there fit that stays consistent regardless of head size adjustments. The construction materials also contribute to a luxurious feel, featuring Gorilla Glass 3-clad cups paired with soft Alcantara synthetic suede ear pads. This combination offers a dramatic black-on-black aesthetic that feels robust yet elegant, suitable for both professional studios and home listening setups.
This model is perfect for anyone seeking the best volume limiting true wireless earbuds equivalent in the world of wired headphones, focusing on detail retrieval and dynamic range. It is also an excellent candidate for those looking for a best gaming headset for music production, given its ability to handle intricate waveguides and diffusion controls that enhance spatial awareness. However, if you are looking for a headphone with a distinctive metallic sheen like the carbon fiber of the Ether, the all-black finish of the Noire X might be too understated. Additionally, while the impedance is a low 13 ohms, making it easy to drive, the lack of active noise cancellation means you rely entirely on passive isolation from the ear pads. Buy this if you prioritize scientific acoustic tuning and all-day comfort; skip it if you prefer a more colorful design or need active features.
• Best for open-back realism in a closed shell → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether (Its retuned V-Planar driver specifically targets a smoother bass-to-midrange transition and reduced upper mid peaks).
• Best for eliminating high-frequency harshness → Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed (AMTS technology actively minimizes standing waves that cause synthetic artifacts).
• Best for long-session comfort → Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed (Self-tensioning headband prevents pressure points better than fixed bands).
• Best for premium visual aesthetics → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether (Carbon fiber cups offer a unique, supercar-inspired look compared to standard glass/suede).
• Best for low distortion in bass → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether (Patented V-Planar technology achieves under 0.5% distortion in low bass frequencies).
• Best for ease of driving → Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed (13 ohm impedance is lower than the Ether's 23 ohms, requiring less power).
• Best for durability and material innovation → Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed (Gorilla Glass 3 cups provide a modern, scratch-resistant alternative to carbon fiber).
• Best for versatile connectivity → DROP + MrSpeakers Ether (Includes a detachable 6.4 ft cable with 4-pin XLR and multiple adapters for various inputs).
In my opinion, for music production, I would choose the Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed. While the DROP + MrSpeakers Ether is undeniably beautiful and offers a fantastic open sound signature, the Noire X's integration of AMTS technology provides a more scientifically rigorous solution for long-term listening. The elimination of standing waves means I can trust my ears for hours without fatigue, which is non-negotiable when making critical mixing decisions. The self-adjusting headband also removes a variable that can distract from the creative process, ensuring that the only thing I'm focused on is the music itself.
Both models excel here, but the Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed has a slight edge due to its self-tensioning headband that evenly distributes pressure, reducing strain during marathon mixes.
Neither requires a massive rig; however, the Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed's 13-ohm impedance is easier to drive than the DROP + MrSpeakers Ether's 23-ohm load, making it more forgiving on portable sources.
The Ether aims for an open, airy sound with a focus on bass dynamics, while the Noire X prioritizes a flat, detailed response by using metamaterials to remove high-frequency standing waves.
Yes, the DROP + MrSpeakers Ether includes a velvet carrying bag, whereas the Dan Clark Audio Noire X Closed is packaged with its necessary cables and documentation for travel.
